CD-R King and retailers to stop selling signal boosters

CD-R King and other retailers have signed an agreement with telco giant, Globe Telecom, to discontinue the sale of illegal repeaters and signals boosters in the country.

Globe Telecom and major gadgets and IT equipment retailers CD-R King General Merchandise, Electronics Boutique and Smile-Com have signed an agreement that will stop the sale of repeaters or signal boosters that do not comply with specifications set by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

This agreement is in accordance to the NTC Memorandum Order 01-02-2013 that prohibits the selling, purchasing, importing, or using of repeaters or boosters that are not approved by the commission in an effort to prevent harmful interference to the Cellular Mobile Networks.

Repeaters or signal boosters are antennas that boost network signals in areas with weak coverage by hogging bandwidth from legitimate network infrastructures.

“We appreciate the cooperation of the major retailers of gadgets and technology items in the country to support our drive against the use of illegal repeaters. Many of the existing retailers have been previously unaware that the sale of such equipment violates existing laws,” said Atty. Froilan Castelo, head of Globe Corporate Legal Services Group.

In the first place, if the telecoms offer better signal all over the metro, we will not need to use mobile phone signal boosters. The fact that we cannot get proper signal even after repeated complaints have left us with no other option but to install our own cellular signal boosters.

You can try but some stores have already stopping selling boosters many months ago. BUT you can still find a few sellers from online ads.

Signal problem with our office. Typical day, the signal is medium to weak depending on where you are seated. But a new condo was constructed between our office and the cell tower, resulting in weak or even no signal inside our office. Even stepping out to our office driveway only results in a weak signal. We called up the mobile phone company and told them out problem a number of times. A couple of months and still no action nor any word from them if they are going to do anything about it. We decided to install our own celfone signal boosters and that solved our mobile phone problems the moment we switched it on. No more waving the mobile phone in the air to "catch-a-wave".

You can still find people selling the boosters on online internet ads like in sul!t.com etc.

This was spearheaded by Globe? I wonder why they wanna be consistently providing crappy service? If a third party company wants to improve your crappy signal, why hinder it?

Maybe Globe should make a way to stop Caritas from sending that health shield whatever, SMDC offers, loans here and there offers they keep on sending their subscribers, or maybe that's with consent?

Marami nang ganito sa online shops from both local and overseas sellers.

I wonder how it interferes with the cellular network when all it does is grab whatever signal is transmitted from the cell tower, boost it and transmit to a small area. How does it "hog bandwidth"? It's not like it sucks in the radio waves from cell towers.

Simply put, when installed incorrectly, the retransmitted signal can still get picked up by the cell tower, causing a feedback loop. Though, that in itself won’t likely take down the service, but the unnecessary emissions adds noise to the system which then use up some bandwidth because the system has to resort to more error correction and other RF countermeasures. But if the interference is bad enough, it will cause legitimate calls to drop or subscribers not being able to obtain a channel.

Think WiFi. The more interference, the lower the data throughput and the lower the number of clients it can support.

There’s a lot more going on but that’s the gist of it. Bottom line is, you need to be a licensed radio techncian that understands RF to be able to deploy these to ensure that the installation does not cause any of the adverse effects I mentioned.

Depends on the booster type. Most are just 2G signal boosters but some also covers 3G.
