1. Definitely not necessary. Besides, there's still no jailbreak for the iPad2 as of this writing
2. Just browse the iTunes AppStore. Download the free stuff that gets your attention so you can get started. You'll know what you'll need when you see it.
3. To some extent, yes. But you'll need a 3rd party app. I use Docs-to-Go. But it's very limited compared to its respective counterpart apps native in Windows. Good for editing and proof-reading docs on-the-go. But to write a 50-page doc on the iPad? Maybe not too enticing, still, it is possible if you're on a bind
4. Yes, but if used as a car nav, it'll be cumbersome as the iPad1/2 is relatively too big for the dashboard. It's ok if you use it occasionally. But for daily use, get a dedicated GPS. As mentioned above, use it as reference only, as it may not provide turn-by-turn directions.

Got my shiny new iPad 2 the other day and the 512MB memory was a breath of fresh air for my apps. I also bought a Targus leather book-type case and matte-finish screen protectors.

Anyway, with regards to the book-type case, I wonder why third-party cover/case makers didn't took advantage of an inherent feature of the iPad 2? Namely, the use of a magnet to turn the iPad 2 on and off.

Here's how it works.

Holding the iPad 2 in portrait mode (with the home button at the bottom), if you move a magnet near a certain spot on the right frame, about 1/3 from the top, it can control the iPad 2's power, akin to how the Smart Cover does it. If that particular spot senses a magnet, the iPad 2 goes to sleep. Remove the magnet, and it powers up. So why haven't I seen any product aside from the Smart Cover that takes advantage of this feature? It's easy enough to embed a small magnet inside a leather case, turning on the iPad 2 as you flip the cover open, and turning it off when the cover is closed.

I read on AppAdvice that Apple is already certifying display manufacturers for the iPad 3, namely, Samsung and LG. No word yet how much increase in display resolution will be on the iPad 3. It could be Retina or something slightly lower.

The iPad 3G has a GPS, while the wifi only version does not. The GPS resides on the same chip as the 3G receiver.

Sadly, no. The 3G iPad's GPS is an Assisted GPS type which requires constant feeding of information from the net. Furthermore, without a connection, the maps won't render, leaving you with a flashing blue beacon indicating ypur position, but without the map context.

Yeap. Offline map nga lang nag tawag dun. Pero hinde sya ganun ka accurate compare to GPS that connecting to satellite.
The source of map is from OpenStreetMap and look for the app called Manila Philippines Offline Street Map. Inuupdate rin yata nila yan per month.

To clarify, there are 3rd party storable maps like what is mentioned by Battlestar. However, you need to have the 3G version of the iPad to get GPS functionality. As for the default iPad map application, map data is not stored locally so it needs internet connectivity to load it.

Steve Jobs said that 2011 is the year of the ipad 2... maybe next year for the ipad 3.

The Apple WWDC event came and passed this month without an iPhone announcement for the first time since they launched the original 2G in 2007. Speculations about the launch date of the iPhone 5 (or 4S) have been circling around ever since.

New info brought to light by Bloomberg pinpoints September as the most probable time for the announcement and launch of the next-gen iPhone. Apple have a traditional September event, which however has so far been focused on iPods and music.

Bloomberg cites two unknown people, which are familiar with the next iPhone. It's no secret that a prototype iPhone "4S" (sharing the iPad 2's dual-core A5 chip) has been given to certain developers - so it really isn't hard to believe that the next iPhone is on its way to millions of inpatient fans. The question is only "WHEN?"

Bloomberg also shares that apart from the upgraded processor, the next iPhone will have a more advanced camera. This could mean improvement in the sensor, technology and so forth but doesn't exactly give out the resolution. Hopefully it will be an 8 MP unit with 1080p video capture.

There's also a rumor that the next iPad is being tested currently. It supposedly has a higher resolution display and that's about it. We've heard that one before about an iPad with a 4 times greater resolution (2048x1536). Remember, this rumor is based on graphics found in the latest iOS 5 SDK. We've heard rumors of next-gen iPad coming as soon as this Fall before but we've never thought there's much truth in it.

We're not done yet folks. It seems that a cheaper iPhone is in the works, intended for developing countries. That sounds ridiculous for a premium hardware manufacturer like Apple, but hey - we might as well pass on the information. It isn't the first time we've heard of such nonsense.

Finally (yes, this is it) we've heard through the grapevine that Apple is thinking of "reinventing" the TV segment with its own iOS-wearing-big-screen-flaunting TV. Yes - an Apple HDTV with AirPlay, apps and all. AppleInsider claims a new product line is about to spawn. Though we find the idea of Apple's design and high-quality screens combined with the smart internals of a iOS device a great one, we somehow doubt that Apple, the computer company, will be dipping its toes on the HDTV market.

A 2048x1536 resolution iPad would require a really robust GPU, which in turn would need a lot of power... This would mean either a shortened battery life or a bigger battery, hence heavier tablet. It's not really practical. I would rather see a more realistic 1680x1050 or 1440x900 resolution, given that your viewing diagonal is barely 10 inches, with the same or longer battery life.
