I'm planning to get one since mobile ako most of the time. My budget may not be suited for a brand new unit.
Is it ok to get one? Will parts become a problem? Any recommended shops? What brand should I get and avoid? Thanks peeps! ;)

    I hope this would help....

If youre getting a laptop, i suggest you get a tablet PC instead. Astig talaga. Pwede siyang keyboard input, and it can also fold it's monitor to become a tablet with its touch sensitive screen (ala PDA).

afaik, compaq and acer sells these kind of portable computing. Sorry, im not really a laptop guy so i cant give further suggestions.

    musang,
determine muna what softwares do you need. You might be unaware but most laptop is "over capacity" to your need if not "over weight" to the mobility that you want.

If you just want word processing, basic spreadsheet and some presentation - then your best bet is not a laptop...instead go for a PDA(P15-25,000). If may email need ka, go for a PDA with phone(P25-50,000). Magaang na, powerfull pa in terms of functions.

    Go for laptop ONLY if:
1)you regularly swap files in diskette
    2)you read CDROM data regularly
3)view and present to a crowd (more than one person at a time)
4)do graphic artwork in a computer
5)handles files that could not fit a diskette capacity or won't compress enough to fit a diskette.
6)you're willing to carry 2-3kg of dead weight in the whole day or most of the day (this is a the typical weight of a laptop).
7)malabo na ang mata mo for small screen

For those mentioned above in 1 and 2...you can settle for a 2nd hand laptop with a minimum specs of Pentium 200MMX (could cost you around P10,000 and up).

If you are on the 3,4 or 5 bracket...you're better off with a brandnew....cheapest in the market is ECS (P30,000) with a lot of goodies that are upgradable.....it could go up to more than P75K.

Bottom line...determine mo muna where will you use it....

The guys at TechTV don't recommend this at all, not yet at least. The technology for handwriting recognition has not developed to a point where we can use it and not go crazy in the process.

Besides, musang did say he was on a budget... :D

any comments or reviews on the ECS?

i'm considering disposing of my desktop cpu at home and getting the P30,000 ECS for mobile use and connecting it to a keyboard, mouse, and monitor for home / office use.

wala nga lang akong feedback..but the 30K model i think has the transmeta crusoe 700mhz processor 128MB ram, ddr ata. powede na basta ndi lang games

    warranty warranty warranty!

Thats the main thing to look out for in laptops
Laptops dont repair as easily a desktops. Old laptops parts are obsolete ans hard to come by. esp the Pent 2 series and below.
Other repair excuses will be the dont have parts/service for laptops bought outside the phillipines. So beware of 2nd hand units. They should at least be locally purchased to minimize service headaches.

Ang matibay na laptop sa experience ko ay ACER & COMPAQ.

Ang pangit na brand ay Texas instruments

If ECS has a really good warranty the go for it.

budget wise, ECS is very intriguing and seems good. I also plan to replace my aging toshiba libretto with an ECS. It is not lightweight at 2.2kg A907(eto yung P29,950) ....my libretto is just 1kg. Anyway, with your budget of around P17K, it won't do you any good in a pentium3 (but the transmeta of ECS is more of a Celeron counter part) dapat mga 30-50K.

In my opinion, your P17K is a bit high for that Pentium 2 class na nakita mo. But the specs of the model should do well enough for your basic needs...except the presentation you mentioned....kasi if you are doing flash or other "hardcore" graphic works....kulang ang pentium 2 mo.

Increase your budget and get a P3....else buy that P17K pentium 2 and finish your work so you can earn more and buy a newer computer later.

    good luck

just go for the ECS, 30K with warranty and brandnew pa... UPGRADABLE anytime. d pa ganun kamahal ang parts ata.

kesa mag 2nd hand ka no warranty tas d mo lam kung anung sira ang tinatago, makakamura ka nga sa simula malay mo sa susunod. play safe nalang if your on a budget.

wala akong experience sa ECS pero my bro is using the transmeta crusoe processor at wala naman sya prob sa notebook nya, basic lang gamit nya, excel word and explorer

sa rising sun computers along taft ave

    ECS Desknote A907 22,700
    ECS Desknote A530 30,000
    ECS Desknote A928 30,900

ang experience ko lang with ECS ay yung sa mga motherboards nila... all i can say is that they suck! laging may topak mga port, di madetect yung video card, or minsan, na-uunder clock ang processor. nakailang balik kami sa pcx hanggang maburat kami at pinapalit nalang namin ng MSI mobo, nagdagdag nalang kami para tapos ang problema.

    Phone num nila

    536-2857 to 58

    or you can visit www.rsuncomputers.com

i went there kanina, may binili ako, and binigyan ako ng current pricelist. yan pa rin un price nila

musang, if you have the means and the time, i dry run mo muna ung any ECS notebook. i'm getting some feedback that the keyboard gets awfully hot pag ginamit ng matagal...as in uncomfortably hot...fyi
