IMO, the accidental champions were: LH, KR and JB in that order of magnitude

1. LH - decided on the last corner of the last race in Sao Paolo - should have been FM....
2. KR - decided on the 3rd(?)/4th(?) corner of the first lap in Sao Paolo.... should have been LH....
3. JB - decided on the (double) diffuser interpretation of the car design - not winning in the second half of the season.... could have been SV...

This was actually decided way back in Hungary, when both title contenders Alonso and Hamilton tried to slash each other's throats till the end of the season. The 2 stooges were so hot with each other, this allowed Kimi to sneak from behind on points.

This was also the last chance of Rubens Barichello to become World Champion. Too bad his Brawn car had more failures than Jenson. He had to give way to his teammate in the end by a mere mathematical point advantage.

And yes, Jenson Button was crowned The Diffuser Champion. When Mercedes-Benz inherited the car, and everyone else got the same diffusers, it ruined the World Champion dreams of Nico Rosberg.

Another 'accidental champion' to a much lesser degree in my record book in the recent past was FA in 2006.

Both MS and FA were neck to neck just before the penultimate race in Suzuka. First time for an engine failure with Ferrari (and with MS), and FA who was just a couple of seconds behind him in the turn could not believe his eyes....

Well, FA won in 2005, so he deserved this one, too, IMO....

Unlike the 3 stooges (LH, KR, JB) who are at the moment, one-time 'accidental' champions, IMO....

Bro,- It was easy to copy Brawn's double diffuser. Proof was that their car was not winning in the second half of the same season, where they were champions. So, NR was well-aware that he was not going to join the best constructor the following season.

Now, what makes the RBR car tick? Nobody can tell for certain.... Maybe Ferrari?

You can call them ALL accidental champions.

Button lucked out on the double diffuser, but look at this season... if RBR didn't have a car that was incredibly better than everything else, Button would be champion.

Hamilton lucked out when Timo Glock made that error in staying out on the wrong tires... but the previous season, he would have won if Ferrari hadn't used "team orders" (mind you, I agree with lifting the ban) and had Kimi "overtake" Massa at one point. Something that they did again (only in reverse) during the next season with Massa leading in points.

Kimi lucked out on that win, maybe, but Kimi had been second in the championship so many times only to have his McLaren blow up, it hurts...

Alonso has shown that he can drive the wheels off a car and put it in a points scoring position way beyond its capabilities. But 2005? Renault won that with the trick mass damper that was banned (I'm still pissed it was banned) so they did have a secret advantage, just like Brawn did with the double diffuser during their one championship season, just like RBR have with the exhaust blown diffuser and flexible front-wing/body system that still has opponents scratching their heads, just like Ferrari did with their flexible wings back during Schumacher's era.

You can have all the advantages in the world, but you still need a championship caliber driver to bring in the trophy.

Unfortunately for Kimi, you also need a championship car. I doubt Williams will have one, but if they get enough sponsorship money from his return, they could vault back into upper-midfield status.

Accidental champion or what, kimi has what it takes. Hes one of the best driver in F1 history. For sure he has a lot o f work to do. Hope that Lotus-Renault give him a competitive car.It will be an exciting F1 next season.
