Puzzling move (for my inexperienced observation) by Mercedes GP.... MS changed tyres (from H to S) while he was running 5th behind KR, with ~13(?) laps to go.
This resulted to KK and SP passing him (and relegating him to 7th)... And although he was setting the fastest laps, these were not good enough as they were only about 0.5sec faster than the rest....So, he was really struggling to overtake SP during the last laps...
Unless he had severe tyre degradation when they changed tyres, then IMO, it was a bad call by Mercedes GP.

July 23rd, 2012 12:01 PM #583Third win for the season by Alonso!
Alonso now with a 34 point championship lead in a tight race among closely matched front running cars.
Vettel came in second but given a 20sec penalty for passing by Button out of the racetrack.
Regarding MSC and tire change, Canada could be in their minds. The reason they use the word "cliff" to describe the tyres' performance is due to the sudden drop in lap times. We are talking seconds or maybe two slower per lap on very old tyres. Canada showed that pitting late have more benefits than making the tyres reach the cliff.

F1: 20 races again in 2013 confirms Bernie Ecclestone
Bernie Ecclestone has played down reports the calendar could be set to explode in 2013.
There have been rumours the F1 chief executive was open to expanding the schedule to no fewer than 26 races next season.
"Not next year," he told DAPD news agency. "There will be 20 again. No new races."
That doesn't bode well for New Jersey, which is scheduled to join the 2014 calendar.
For 2014, Russia is set to host a grand prix at Sochi, while Argentina is reportedly close to a deal.
"I hope we don't have to remove any existing races," said Ecclestone.

More bad news for Red Bull. The FIA have set their foot down and have issued a rules clarification effectively banning Red Bull's clever engine mapping solution that allows them to possibly recreate off-throttle diffuser blowing by limiting torque at mid-range rpms.
Limiting torque means they can move more air through the engine and out the exhaust without burning more fuel. This also means that there's less power going through the tires on corner exit, letting them hook up better. A sort of "poor man's traction control" that can be tailored to each specific track.
It came out when an FIA inspector noticed RBR's engine mapping in Germany was wildly different from other tracks. Now the FIA is clarifying that torque can not vary from a selected base map by 2% over the rest of the season.
This means Red Bull will have to choose a map that is either great on courses where they need to conserve tires or great on courses where they need more power. Not both.
This also means Red Bull's "amazing" tire conservation in a number of previous races might be at an end.
