MANILA, Philippines --- Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile quit his post as leader of the Senate on Monday afternoon but in an instant regained hold of the position through a vote of confidence by his colleagues.

In an impassioned speech at the Senate and aired live on television, Enrile said it was his interest not to drag the name of the august body into the mudslinging he had been subjected to these past days.

By declaring the seat of the Senate President vacant, Enrile’s motion was quickly opposed by Sen. Vicente Sotto III.

Senators were called to vote on whether to accept the motion of Enrile to quit his post or stay on as Senate President.

Those present voted, 10 to 2, rejecting Enrile’s motion to quit his post.
