Miriam wages war vs. Recto's sin tax bill » Nation » News | Philippine News | philstar.com

Sen Santiago: “I am gobsmacked at the committee report. It is an abject surrender to the very rich and very powerful tobacco and alcohol lobby,”

“I don't buy the argument that cigarettes and alcohol are the entertainment of the poor. The purpose of entertainment is relaxation, not death, the purpose of the bill is to save 240 smokers from death each day".

Sabi ni Ralph Morris, most of the provisions in the lower house version is "bahala na ang Diyos". They run counter to international laws regarding taxation of liquor. Remember the hoolabaloo when the Philippines decided to increase taxes on imported books and printed material...

Saan ba maaaring makita ang basis nila sa 60B, 30B o 15B?

If they base those estimates on the current volumes, they are bound to be disappointed. Dapat mas conservative sila sa estimates dahil a rise in prices will surely mean less consumption (even for a short term).. pero pag bumalik ang consumption inspite of the rise in prices... eh di bonus na nila yun...

So when they play up the estimates of 60B or 30B or 15B for that matter, at what volumes are they pertaining to ba?

Napaka inam ng intent na itaas mo ang rates.. pag bumaba ang usage.. eh di okay.. bababa in the future ang gastusin sa health care related to smoking / alcohol.. however.. in the same light.. if you increase the rates and consumption goes down.. volume goes down therefore collections may also go down.. so for the government.. are you really after putting down consumption? or are you really after increasing collections? Magpaka totoo na lang gobyerno.. if they want more collections by taxing it more, definitely bababa ang volumes.. and the estimates of volumes / consumption should significantly be lower.. now kung sa lower (say by half) ang consumption and they are still able to hit that 60B collection.. then yun ang the best..

pero kung itaas ang tax and yet volume / consumption estimates are not adjusted CONSERVATIVELY LOWER to reflect possible shift in consumption due to the high price... then the government is just taking the public for fools.. later on, they will again justifiy the increase in rates since di daw na hit ang target collection, where in fact, yung estimates talaga nila ang may problem... the end effect is sobra sobrang taxes sa tao...

I suppose kung alcohol / smoking related.. you can always say na okay lang bisyo naman... pero the collections / estimates on this will also have an effect on other taxes... kung malaki na ang collection dito... it is possible that other taxes on other goods can be softened na.. or kung may need pa ng ibang taxes... di na ganun kalaki ang taxes na hahabulin dun .. until the new and more requirement for revenues come in...

I hope not. If Vilma is doing well, let the people of Batangas decide whether she is fit or not. Hindi naman si Ralph ang nagpapatakbo doon. Let him suffer alone IMO.

It's the responsibility of the smokers and the drunkards to save themselves. Alam mo na ngang dyan ka mamamatay, gagawin mo pa. Kahit sky high ang tax nyan, smokers will still smoke.

If the logic in increasing taxes is to stop smokers from smoking, will legalizing shabu and impose high tax on it save the drug addicts?

Sin tax bill should be viewed from another perspective.

Why save smokers and drunkards, buhay nila yan.

Meanwhile, since they're addicted to these deadly vices, taasan ang insurance premium ng mga ito since obviously, mas mahal ang cost of healthcare - healthcare na napupunta sana dapat sa mga walang-wala, lalo na sa countryside. The Govt is spending about 140 billion for the healthcare of these geniuses and yet, it only gets about less than 5% from the tobacco companies. Parang Mining ito eh.

High taxes and tariffs would enable the Govt to earn more from these slaves of vices. Let's face it. Addict na sila dito, so we might as well benefit from it. They're gonna die of lung cancer anyway which will cost a lot to alleviate so I'm sure they wouldn't mind spending a bit more. Hopefully, Govt spends it on preventing young kids from starting to smoke and elevate the healthcare of the needy.
