December 13th, 2013 11:02 AM #1Sevilla named Customs chief
President Benigno Aquino 3rd has appointed Finance Undersecretary John Philip Sevilla as the new commissioner of the Bureau of Customs.
In a press conference, Palace spokesman Edwin Lacierda said Sevilla will take over from Ruffy Biazon, who resigned after the Justice department charged him with allegedly receiving kickbacks from the release of his Priority Development Assistance Fund when he was a congressman.
Sevilla’s appointment was made on December 9, Lacierda said.
Sevilla was earlier named officer-in-charge at the bureau right after Biazon quit.
He was the Department of Finance’s Undersecretary for the Corporate Affairs Group and Privatization since 2010 and served as Undersecretary for Privatization from 2006 to 2007.
Sevilla was an executive director at the investment bank Goldman Sachs, and had covered the Philippines as an associate director and sovereign rater for credit rating agency Standard and Poor’s.
He also served as Chief Operating Officer of Synergeia foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of public education in the Philippines.
