MANILA, Philippines – The only child of Senator Teofisto 'TG' Guingona III got into a car accident early Friday morning.

Pieyter Norman Guingona, 18, crashed his Isuzu Alterra onto the center island of the Katipunan flyover in Quezon City.

Guingona got stuck on the wheel and had to be extricated from the crash.

Guingona had just brought his girlfriend home in Kapitolyo, Pasig City and was on his way to his Quezon City house when the accident happened.

According to a witness, taxi driver Charlie Bascal, the car was traveling fast before it hit the center island.

There was no sign that Guingona had been drinking. According to the MMDA, Guingona may have fallen asleep while driving and lost control of his car.

He was brought to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center, but was later transferred to St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City.

The senator arrived at the hospital around 5 a.m. but declined to talk to the media. His staff, however, said the younger Guingona is in stable condition.

In a statement, the senator said: “It was unfortunate that it happened, it was a self accident, no civilian was hurt, we'll keep you updated as to the condition of my son.” – Reports from Eric Dastas, dzMM and Raffy Santos, ABS-CBN News
