Technology without God is dangerous, pope says
    April 8, 2012 8:36am

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict, leading the world's Catholics into Easter, said on Saturday technological progress, in the absence of awareness of God and moral values, posed a threat to the world.

Benedict presided at a solemn Easter vigil Mass in St Peter's Basilica to usher the 1.2 billion-member church into the most important day of its liturgical calendar.

The basilica, the largest church in Christendom, was in the dark for the start of the service to signify the darkness in Jesus' tomb before what Christians believe was his resurrection from the dead three days after his crucifixion.

The some 10,000 faithful in the basilica lit candles as the pope moved up the central aisle on a wheeled platform he uses to conserve his strength and then the basilica's lights were turned on when he reached the main altar.

Wearing gold and white vestments at the Mass, his last Holy Week service before Easter Sunday, Benedict wove his sermon around the theme of darkness and light.

"The darkness that poses a real threat to mankind, after all, is the fact that he can see and investigate tangible material things, but cannot see where the world is going or whence it comes, where our own life is going, what is good and what is evil," he said.

"The darkness enshrouding God and obscuring values is the real threat to our existence and to the world in general," he said.

Benedict, repeating one of the central themes of his pontificate, said man was too often in awe of technology instead of being in awe of God.

"If God and moral values, the difference between good and evil, remain in darkness, then all other 'lights', that put such incredible technical feats within our reach, are not only progress but also dangers that put us and the world at risk," he said.

"With regard to material things, our knowledge and our technical accomplishments are legion, but what reaches beyond, the things of God and the question of good, we can no longer identify," he said.

The pope, who returned from a grueling trip to Mexico and Cuba last week, looked fatigued at the long service, during which be baptized eight adults from Italy, the United States, Slovakia, Turkmenistan, Albania, Germany and Cameroon. He turns 85 on April 16.

On Sunday the pope will preside at an Easter day Mass and then deliver his twice-yearly "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) blessing and message from the central balcony of St Peter's Basilica. — Reuters

Obvious efforts of the vatican not to become obsolete in the modern world.

Unfortunately for the church, modern science has come to the point where the mysteries of the world and universe can now be explained leaving little for religion to pickup on.

    Existence of God:question:

Arguments for and against the existence of God have been proposed by philosophers, theologians, scientists, and others. In philosophical terms, arguments for and against the existence of God involve primarily the sub-disciplines of epistemology (theory of knowledge) and ontology (nature of being), but also of the theory of value, since concepts of perfection are often bound up with notions of God.

The debate concerning the existence of God raises many philosophical issues. A basic problem is the existence of both monotheistic and polytheistic views. A wide variety of arguments exist which can be categorized as metaphysical, logical, empirical, or subjective. The existence of God is subject to lively debate both in philosophy[1]—the philosophy of religion being almost entirely devoted to the question—and in popular culture.

Some atheists maintain that arguments for the existence of God show insufficient reason to believe. Certain theists acknowledge that belief in the existence of God may not be amenable to demonstration or refutation, but rests on faith alone. Other religions, such as Buddhism, do not concern themselves with the question of the existence or non-existence of God at all. Psychological and sociological explanations for believing in the existence of God may point to a shared neurological and cultural framework for belief based on cognitive processes in the brain.

pa-pansin na lang yan dahil alam nila religion is dying. tingnan niyo lang simbahan ngayon compare niyo nung 80's-90's at philippines is one of the most religious country in the world. pano pa kaya sa mga non religious countries like america? yung simbahan malapit sa bahay namin sa america 2 na lang schedule ng mass pag sat and sunday, 1 in the morning and 1 at 6pm kasi halos wala na nag sisimba.

Mas maganda kung via Tweet or FB pinadala ni Pope Benedict yung message niya. :D

IMO, the Church should not move against Science and technology but continue to grow and move along with it; they should use it to their advantage even. Nothing wrong with that if you ask me. Faith will still be there even if the origin of things can be explained as man is just using the talents given to him to further discover the universe.

Just compare the Philippines with our asian neighbours who do not believe in the Catholic church.

It's perhaps safer to say that Technology without Values is dangerous.

The problem with most people is that they need an external source for these values, and cannot internalize them with a motivating factor... karma... nirvana... eternal salvation. True values and altruistic goodness are exceedingly rare in this world.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

I really don't get atheists or those who embrace science over religion. what do astronomers/scientists really do, they look at their telescopes, sit all day long, observe, compute, chart etc. and then suddenly they have the answer to the universe. I mean did any of these scientists went to Mars or as far as the Sun to confidently say that hey I know the Universe by heart. To me, Science is just another blind faith - another religion with convincing arguments but without a God - that's all there is to it. but is what they preach absolute truth? - I think not. if it is, that why are we not living in a perfect error-free world?

tama nga yun sabi sa Game of Thrones eh - "If Arithmetic wins wars, then Mathematicians should have ruled the world." - that's not the case of history naman eh
