religion, in its many forms (including druidistic ones calling for human sacrifice), has been around for thousands of years which makes it a bit hard to argue against the importance of it.

mazdamazda:he wasn't referring to 3rd world countries in the first place.
noted...maybe he should do something about the rising cost of raising a child so people can multiply all they want

madali para sa pope na sabihin sa tao na magparami sila ng anak, lalo na hind nama si pope magpapakain at magpapaaral sa mga bata. come to think of it, whct does a celibate pope know about raising kids?

tama si lenin, religion is the opium of mankind.

even before he became the pope, hindi na maganda ang recod ni ratzi. in fact even sa germany, which is his hometown, ayaw nila na maging pope sya.

uh, it's hardly a religion issue alone. for many, it's a practical one. to blast the pope and religion for that "irresponsible" statement is being unfairly hasty.

governments around the world are moving to arrest extremely low birth rates. mahihirapan din sila in the future.

hence, singapore is encouraging citizens to have ***. hence a lot of countries are increasingly turning to immigration to man their labor forces.

it's an economy thing. rich countries tend to have career-oriented citizens, hence you see women who forego their child-bearing years for career advancement. poor countries tend to have citizens who have too much free time on their hands... and with free time, they have free ***. they also tend to think that having more children will give them greater chances of eventually bringing in wealth into the family.

I don't know if you guys have noticed this disturbing trend. I've observed that third world countries have more radical or militant catholic church personalities. While in more progressive or "industrialized" countries, the catholic church is not even a powerful lobby group.

I guess, to a certain extent, the catholic church draws its clout from the poorest sector of society since they are the ones who rely more on charity.

though it is interesting to note that many Protestant churches / denominations support birth control (for married couples).

but then again, Protestant churches allows their pastors to marry, to have women as priest / bishops, to retain earthly possessions, etc.

    altis6453,

not surprising, since those who are materially well-off have less "need" for spiritual comfort... whereas those who are materially needy are more likely to look forward to the "salvation and deliverance" that religion promises.

AFAIK, a lot of priests in the U.S. support birth control, through whatever means. This is one of the many reasons why U.S. Catholic priests, churches and dioceses are often at odds with Rome.
