Palace to MRT passengers: Try other modes of transportation

Following problems being encountered by the Metro Rail Transit (MRT), Malacañang on Thursday urged commuters to try other modes of transportation.

Or at least until the new coaches arrive.

Baka naman puwedeng matuklasan yung iba pang mga options," Presidential Communications Operations Office head Herminio Coloma Jr. said during a press briefing.

He specifically encouraged commuters to try riding passenger buses, thousands of which supposedly traverse EDSA daily.

"Hindi naman siksikan yung mga bus na 'yun," he said.

"Siyempre may advantages yung MRT in terms of economy and efficiency, dahil nga walang traffic kapag nakasakay ka na.

According to MRT 3 general manager Al Vitangcol, the MRT carries 560,000 passengers on average per day, much higher than its original design capacity, which Vitangcol pegged at 320,000 passengers per day. Passengers have been complaining about the long queues at stations.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte had earlier said the new coaches will arrive in February 2015. — Kimberly Jane Tan/BM, GMA News

Sobrang mali yung phrasing ni Coloma, but honesty mas convenient magbus. Yung ipipila mo na extra oras, compensates for the longer travel time of a bus vs. MRT.

Yung byaheng Alabang or Baclaran or Tambo 6-11 hindi naman gaano. But even with the Ayala bus nakakaupo pa rin ako.

I agree that the public has to show their discontent with the way the MRT is run, but at the same time totoo rin na pwedeng magbus at natry ko na to and I get to my office less stressed and haggard as opposed to if I took the train.

Good politics but bad economics.

May suggestions na cut down yung mga stations or introduce express trains that go to the most heavily used stations. Para ma cut down yung turn around time. Also regarding adding coaches. One big problem ng gobyerno...walang long time planning. Dapat noon 2005 pa sila bumili. Ngayon lang nagisip bumili, two years kailangan pa para ma deliver....

I think we should stop complaining and stop pitying ourselves over traffic and commuting woes. Malacanang is right, we should think of alternative ways. These are my suggestions :

    1. Helicopters, hot air balloons. Most of the new buildings in Makati, Ortigas and BGC already have helipads. The developers seems to have foresight. Of course the government can learn from them instead of blaming population growth. why are tax money paying NSO to gather data for?
    2. Motorcycles/Motorbikes. Cheaper than commuting and if your boss and building admin will agree, you can park it beside your cubicle. And bonus to that, 2-wheel vehicles are exempted from traffic rules.
    3. Walk/Run. If you can do this for charity, to be seen, for fb posts and whatever high-profile causes there is, you can definitely do it everyday for your own sake. You don't have to wait for after office hours to jog at Ayala triangle.
    4. Fly on your own. We've seen tremendous advancement in science - be it jetpack or bioengineering, getting yourself a set of wings is easier. You can also strap yourself a hundred balloons. And if you don't have the money, try getting yourself bitten by a manananggal or aswang - blood sucking creatures never get stuck in any traffic.
    5. Escort. This is what government officials meant when they say 'what traffic?!'. The wang-wang and mandatory slapping on your car window telling you to make way for very important public servants.
    6. The calling card. Cheaper than escort is that piece of card stock with some very important name on it. What number coding?!
    7. Vanity plates. No number, no coding.
    8. Taxi. What else can weave in and out of esquinitas to avoid clogged main thoroughfares. You just need money (your transpo budget, lunch money and whatever supposed to go into savings) and patience of a beauty queen waiting to be chosen by the gods of commuting.
    9. Boats or submarine. works only during rainy season, but still a solution.
    10. Telecommuting. No traffic here, only FUPs and dropped connection. But no traffic! no internet traffic that is.
    11. Get up earlier. Who needs 6 to 8 hours sleep? You can sleep on the bus or while queuing for MRT.
    12. Bunk in the office. Security and maintenance personnel do that, it's not beneath you to do it too. Or you can 'bunk' in 7-11, mini-stop or Starbucks.
    13. Get a job with alternative shifts. Call center agent, nurse, security guard, 24 hour food service crew, fish monger, balut vendor, a burglar, a prostitute, a pimp, a mugger, ......
    14. Teleportation. You won't believe it, but it's more believable than a clean efficient effective and sensitive government.
    15. Buses. For some reason MRT passengers are either stupid or oblivious to the existence of this mode of transpo that is totally spacious and without passengers.
    16. Bring your own car. Government officials do it, why can't you? stop complaining!
    17. Roller blades, Skates, or hoverboards. See #3, only cooler!
    18. Kalesa or Karitela. Eco-friendly too, zero emission.
    19. Horse, Carabao, Mule, Camel and other beast of burden. #18, but much cooler.
    20. Befriend a superhero. only the ones that can fly or teleport. Dibs on the Flash!
    21. I think this is enough, you can add your own.

imho, overpopulated lang talaga ang MM. It'd be nice to hear the CBCP's comments on the situation, malamang sasabihin naman na problema na ng gobyerno yan. Kumbaga sa restaurant e CBCP taga order, gobyerno(and ultimately the taxpayers) and sagot sa chit.

560,000 passengers per day x Php10 on the average = Php5.6M per day revenue. I wonder how much talaga operating expense ng MRT if lugi pa siya sa Php2B revenue per year

    1) Bayad utang
    2) Electricity

    2b is around 5m a day.

    Sounds right.

I recall the government saying they subsidize the MRT by about 12p per passenger... so the ticket price is just 50% of that needed to simply break even.

Given the cost of operating the trains and the upkeep of the entire system, for a profitable MRT, passengers should be paying at least 30 pesos per trip, I think. Or, if they don't want to pay that much, wag nang mag-aircon.

Wanna play, gotta pay. Otherwise, we will never be able to spread the light-rail system to the rest of the metro.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
