Israel seeks US green light for Iran attack- report

LONDON -- Israel is seeking permission from the United States to fly its jets over Iraq to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, The Daily Telegraph newspaper said Saturday, citing sources.
A senior Israeli defense official told the conservative British broadsheet in a dispatch from Tel Aviv that negotiations were taking place for the US-led coalition in Iraq to provide an "air corridor" over Iraq if the Jewish state decided on unilateral action.
"We are planning for every eventuality, and sorting out issues such as these are crucial," the official said.
"If we don't sort these issues out we could have a situation where American and Israeli war planes start shooting at each other."
Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has in the past called for Israel to be wiped off the map.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a report Thursday saying that Iran had not halted, and in fact had expanded, its uranium enrichment program, defying a United Nations Security Council demand to stop by this week.
The United States, France and Britain have called for tougher Security Council sanctions on Tehran, while Germany, China and Russia have taken softer stances. Iran denies US charges that it seeks nuclear weapons.
An Israeli officer involved in the military planning told The Daily Telegraph: "One of the last issues we have to sort out is how we actually get to the targets in Iran. The only way to do this is to fly through US-controlled air space in Iraq."
A senior Israeli security official who works on the strategic committee set up to deal with the Iran threat, chaired by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said: "The amount of effort we are putting into this single issue is unprecedented in the history of the State of Israel," the newspaper reported.
Israel has refused to rule out pre-emptive military action against Iran. Israeli warplanes in 1981 destroyed the Osirak nuclear reactor near Baghdad after suspecting Iraq of aiming to build nuclear weapons.

If Iran can show it can be a responsible nuclear power, I'm sure there wouldn't be such a big fuss. But, Iran has already showed its intent to erase the Jewish race.
Israel is surrounded on almost all sides by potential enemies. Look on the map and see how small a country Israel is compared to most Arab countries. It's a wonder the Israelis haven't been pushed to the sea yet after being attacked several times in the past. Credit that to the Israelis and their strong will to survive.
Israel has been rumored to have nuclear arms for a long time now. That doesn't make them a bad boy. They haven't threatened to use it on any country yet. But, they will use it if they were threatened with imminent destruction which I take would mean their armies were defeated and their people defenseless.

Errr, they have. Countless times, but the veiled threat has been sugar-coated with semantics.
I remember the time they threatened to retaliate against Iraq, which was trying to drag Israel into the Gulf War by aiming Scud missiles. They used language like "...if Iraq launches missiles against Israel, then Baghdad will experience the heat of a million suns.." or something to that effect, an obvious reference to the thermal wave a nuclear strike generates.
IMO, Israel is a back-biter, and will even bite the hand that feeds it (remember Jonathan Polard?). And it doesn't give a damn about diplomatic niceties or international law, as long as it meets its objectives (e.g. Adolf Eichmann kidnapping)

hmm.... once Israel starts rattling its sword, it's probably serious.
with this development, tataas na naman presyo ng langis sa world market, syet....
Back in the early 80's or late 70's yata, when Iraq was almost nearing the completion of it's nuclear facilities, Operation Babylon was launched by Israel.
IIRC, US was totally caught off-guard when Israeli jets flew into Iraq and destroyed it's nuclear facilities before it became operational. Israel only informed the US about Operation Babylon when it's jets were already in the air, too late for US to do anything thru diplomatic channels at that time. hehehe
