A MILITANT labor group yesterday slammed the government’s "callousness" for tinkering with P12.5 billion in funds of the Social Security System for its P330 billion economic stimulus package, saying workers who are primarily affected by the global financial crisis need the funds more.
Joshua Mata, secretary general of the Alliance for Progressive Labor (APL), said it is "amazing" how the government could stomach the idea of getting the money of millions of SSS members to supposedly pump prime the economy to enable it to prop up its image.
"Ang perang pinaghirapan ng mga tao ay hindi dapat galawin dahil para ito sa mga pangangailangan nila, sa retirement nila… pagkatapos ngayon ay gagamitin sa ibang bagay," he said.
"This is one proof of our previous suspicion that Neri was placed in that post to enable Malacañang to tinker with the workers’ money," Mata added.
Mata said APL would definitely look into the suggestion of some senators to file a class suit against SSS administrator Romulo Neri for wrongly diverting the SSS members’ money.
Minority leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. and Sen. Francis Escudero had urged members of the SSS to file a class suit versus Neri including charges of technical malversation.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the government will not stop using the SSS funds for the economic stimulus package even if a class suit is filed.
