[OPINION] From the war on drugs to the war on the Reds
The real reason for his change of mind can be deduced. One should bear in mind that the falling out was manifested in the non-confirmation of the four leftists in their cabinet positions. Here are some reasons that I would like to put forward:
The Reds have become critical of his authoritarian rule, his failure to fulfil his promises, and the rising number of victims of EJKs ,most of whom come from the lower class. This growing critique made him aware they could not be trusted to be loyal to him. They had become a threat to his rule.
The Reds are no longer useful. They may have helped him come to power but they cannot help him stay in power. His continuing association and friendship with them can weaken his hold on power especially with the military, who by nature are anti-communist. Many of them have been suspicious or antagonistic to his links with the Reds.
His fear of the military drove him to make efforts at gaining their loyalty, not just by buying them off but by adopting their anti-communist obsession. He also appointed former military men to cabinet and key positions. In doing so, he thought that his hold on power could be guaranteed.
Red-tagging is also a means of diverting attention from his incompetence in addressing the real crises of the nation – the pandemic, the corruption, etc.
