Good article. Perhaps the only other thing that has the biggest effect on poverty aside from corruption in government.

Raises a lot of questions though. Will foreign ownership really lower the cost of basic utilities? Or will it just bring a new set of much more resource rich elites to lobby their interests? What are the other negatives?

For real estate I know foreign ownership raises property values. So much so in some places that it becomes impossible for locals to afford property in their own country.

I also question his willingness and capability to do anything about it. If the past year's performance is any indication, the result of the election seems a case of wishful thinking and misplaced confidence.

In NZ and AUS, chinese are buying properties left and right. We may end up being a chinese territory afterall. Not really a good way to improve the economy.

Lessen corruption, red-tape and improve infrastructure and lower utilities cost. Those are the major problem that we have that we really need to address.

i haven't researched it yet, but it seems Cambodia owes China money. Loans were used to finance infra projects. They may end up losing some territory right where they share a border with China. Pambayad utang.

Nothing's for free i suppose...but we should still shop around for better deals.

So you mean the people running the country now aren't from the elite? It's just the same class with a different set of faces.

Take Duterte out of the picture - are Aguirre, Alvarez, and the rest of his bunch of lapdogs any better than De Lima, Belmonte, etc?

Oh and before we forget - the Marcoses, Enrile, Jinggoy, Binay and GMA among others are now reunited with the impunity they've enjoyed for so long. I remember everyone was calling for the ouster of these undoubtedly corrupt theives.

Suddenly, because Duterte is chummy with them, noone bats an eye. Personality politics at its finest - whether out of pride or blind fanaticism, people are standing by Duterte.

Rich people will never understand how slum areas works kaya d nila kita ang changes kasi safe na safe sila sa kanilang well fenced areas.

That 'elite faction' has moved the GDP to almost 2% and the economy grew to almost 7% with a BOP surplus of $2.7B in 2015. Dont talk to me about illegal drugs because first world countries have the same problem. So far duterte has slowly reversed all the gains we have achieved in the past 10 years because of his loyalty to the marcoses.

it used to be unclear how our politics is divided

    di naman by ideology

dami political parties pero pareho ang ipinaglalaban (para sa mahirap daw)

    now t's become clear

we now have 2 political parties

    the Aquino party

and the other party is everyone on the receiving end of the Aquino's vindictiveness

Really? If Digongs base is Visayas and Mindanao against the elites of NCR, then why this?

If you equate vindictiveness with bringing crooks to justice, albeit not all of them, then I agree with you. Or are you saying that those people are innocent?

Lesser evil number 1. At least there is subtlety.

Number 2 mga kampon ni Duterte. Mga ugaling tambay sa kanto. No shame at all. Proud pa sa pagiging immoral (such as that Alvarez)
