Chinese man, 2 Filipinos charged with spying
MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation arrested last week a Chinese national and two Filipinos for alleged espionage activities targeting not only military sites in the country but also power installations—and even the Malampaya onshore gas plant.
The three suspects, Deng Yuanqing, Ronel Jojo Balundo Besa and Jayson Amado Fernandez, were allegedly engaged in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations “to the prejudice of our national defense,” NBI Cybercrime Division chief Jeremy Lotoc said in a briefing on Monday that was also joined by Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
This is a photo of what was in the trunk of the car of the Chinese spy recently caught by the NBI and AFP.
My guess on what the items are from left to right:
1. Fiber to ethernet converter
2. 6-bay Synology NAS
3. 8 port ethernet switch (on top of the NAS)
4. modular IPC
5. Power inverter (yellow)
6. Transmitter / signal booster?
All of these are commercially available. These guys are obviously doing data gathering (probably like wardriving). They also can't transmit everything in real-time it seems (hence the need for a 6-bay NAS).
The press says geo-mapping so I'm thinking you will need something like LIDAR for that (like what a robot vacuum uses) so we need to see what else is in the car.

Marcoleta grills Tarriela after backlash on ‘no such thing’ as WPS quip | INQUIRER.net
“How can one face the younger generations today and tell them that our Exclusive Economic Zone to the west of our archipelago is nonexistent, effectively giving up the fight to assert their rights as Filipinos in the West Philippine Sea?” he added.
Still irked by the bashing he received, Marcoleta asked Tarriela why he had not issued a statement clarifying that the “traitor” remark did not come from him.
“I am not under any obligation to tell all social media influencers [or] bloggers to defend your name, to tell them that you are not a traitor. Those words did not come from me. Why would I go to the extent of defending you when you are running for Senate?” the PCG official answered.

Why was docu film on WPS pulled out from film fest? | INQUIRER.net
by Marinel Cruz
March 15, 2025
MANILA, Philippines — As news spread that a documentary on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) had been ordered “pulled out” by the organizers of a film festival that started Friday, social media went abuzz over the lack of a clear explanation for the entry’s removal.
The void only fanned speculation among netizens, with many crying censorship as they noted the documentary’s sensitive geopolitical subject, despite the festival being a privately funded initiative.
The film—“Food Delivery: Fresh from the West Philippine Sea”—chronicles the experiences of Filipino fishermen, Philippine Coast Guard personnel and Navy officers as they conduct supply missions to Philippine island outposts in the WPS, the country’s exclusive economic zone which is being claimed by China.![]()
