Guys! im a newbie here and im planning to buy a car in October. At first im really inlove with the new civic but i realized all flood, potholes, the long distance drives and the 6 pesos difference of gas to diesel. So i tried looking for diesel alternatives that is within my budget, the typical AUVs came up but they are just not my type, in fact I hate AUVs. So now the SUVs are my target but only the good second hand ones.

Guys, help me decide on what second hand SUVs (diesel) should i buy and is that a good idea over a brand new civic? Currently on my list is a second hand 98 prado diesel M/T, next is the brand new civic.

Is it true that diesel engines last 1M kms?

Diesel engines are built tougher especially 80s diesel engines, to withstand the high pressure fuel compression nature of the diesel engines.

The Diesel engines of the 80s are made of block IRON, which is tougher than your present day aluminumized diesel engine, But in general present day diesel engines can outlast gas engines, one reason is the lubricating nature of the diesel fuel, less wear and tear for the engine, the high pressure resistant engine block which is usually designed with allowance.

the 1 Million Km is usually for the 80s designed engines, the newer ones, although they can outlast any gas engines, they wont last as long as the old school or 80s designed BI block engines.

Pajero 99 model 4X4 pa. Basta hanap ka 1st owner at maayos in general yung unit. Wala ka problema sa parts dahil kahit saan meron. And as mentioned above very reliable yung engine kasi old school ang mga parts ng pajero. And to think na andami pang gen 1 na tumatakbo.

Get a Paj. Sa 850K may makukuha ka ng Gen 2.5 Pajero.

    Thanks for the info Mojo!

rion, im not into AUVs eh... dont get me wrong, isuzu's diesel actually has a very good reputation but the resale value and noise of the isuzu diesel is just plain wrong...

oliver.. actually lagi pumapasok sa isip ko yang pajero e, the thing is my family is too loyal to mitsu and i have a really bad impression with the brand, bilis masira mitsu e, except for the box type lancer ng dad ko before... biruin mo it went thru lahar in pampanga during the pinatubo days, kasabay lang nya mga truck, headlight level na kasi yung lahar nun and yet keeps on going and going ... but the cars that came after that sirain na,

So are you guys saying the 98' prado is not a good idea?

walang brand new na suv diesel na halagang 850,000 pesos... pwede pa gawin mo pang downpayment sa banko autoloan, financing or through leasing...

otherwise just look for a secondhands... most probably vehicle comming from subic which is much cheaper...

anyway here are some diesel suv's to choose for:
    toyota fortuner
    land cruiser
    bmw x5 3.0d
    bmw x3 2.0d
    ford everest
    hyundai santa fe
    hyundai tucson
    isuzu alterra
    kia sorento
    pajero
    montero sport
    ssangyong rexton
    nissan patrol

    baka mayroon pa ako nakalimutan...

first think if DO YOU REALLY NEED AN SUV? coz maybe your just thinking about those few days na maulan .. and maybe mga dinadaan mo wala namang baha ... plus the civic is not bad ! it can tackle floods rin naman e at a certain level lang nga .. tska pag sobrang taas nrin naman ng baha khit diesel suv kapa de kanarin makakadaan e ....so i suggest that you think for the long term ... not for those rainy days lang ...

my suggestion .. a brand new civic ... coz its brand new less of a headache .. but if you really insisit on having a 2nd hand suv .... the patrol prado or pajero is a very good choice .... but be ready to deal with 2nd hand woes plus the pajero is SLOW AS A TURTLE ...... hindi na nakakatuwa gamitin

The reputation came from AT Pajero with the 2.5 or 2.8 engine... Having an MT Pajero cures the problem...

Anyway the recommendation for the buyer is to get the 99-00 Fieldmaster 4x4 with Manual Transmission so that will not be a problem...

hehe i think the reputation came WAY BEFORE the fieldmaster hehe we used to have a 1987 pajero ... the non turbo pa 2.5 4d56 hehe potek it takes forever to get to 60kph even longer and swerte na to reach 100kph pero matibay hehe

anyways ... i think if your not into speed .. id opt for the 2.8 fieldmaster na ... kung pareho lang mabagal dun na ako sa mas mabilis ng konti hehe plus get the 4x2 nlng para mas lighter ... it helps a lot in speed

Ba't kasi malaking bagay ang speed na basis when you're thinking of getting an SUV? It's like asking for a sugar mommy with Pauline Luna body & looks.

Kung malaking bagay ang speed sa preference mo sa isang sasakyan, then get a 2nd hand Civic SiR or a Lynx RS o kaya yong mga nakapost sa 4x4ph na Skyline GTRs.

It is slow off the line. And with 99 horsepower, what can one expect? It may be slow, but it is nearly unstoppable against almost any on-road obstacles you encounter. If needed (based on my actual experience), it can climb curbs, ford water, drive on stairs. Any standing obstacle, 6" or below it can climb over. Anything above that depends on driver discretion and skill level. You don't even have to brake for potholes and you don't have to tiptoe your way across railroad tracks. Diyan mo na mauunahan yung Civic. hehehe. And it still rides great, your passengers are not flying around the cabin.

I've had to climb a lamp post stump (the cement base of lamp posts in the Sampaloc area) and did it without breaking a sweat.

A sack (sand or cement probably) fell of a cargo truck, I just drove over it. No drama whatsoever. Behind me, I could hear tires screeching like crazy and on my mirrors I can see the cars swerving like crazy (nagulat kasi).

Binangga na din ako ng owner-type jeep (side impact). The jeep's bumper just ended up underneath my vehicle. No body damage on my part. Yun nga lang, the jeep was stuck because it caught on to my rear tire. hehehe.
