    Might be aquaplaning.......

Last sunday. galing ako calaca, batangas lakas ng ulan tapos gabi na, when i was at the zigzag road of cuenca for the first time para akong bulag mag-drive wala akong makita kahit high na heads ko at bukas spotlights ko as in wala......... all i had to do is tignan yung gilid ng daan sa right side as my basis na tama pa ang pagliko ko........... nakakatakot mag-drive talaga pag gabi at malakas ang ulan........ lalo na at zigzag!!!

if visibility is very low, adapt your speed to your vision.

    in other words, slow down.

    ingat mga prends!

i always passby skyway pag talagang bumabagyo para safe sa baha. one thing i notice is talagang pag malakas ulan, almost 5% lang ang visibility dyan. dapat dyan ang speed mo would only go 40-50 kph at that time kundi you will not see any vehicle or any road impediment 10 feet in front of you.

reminder lang din dyan sa skyway pag malakas ulan. roads are a little bit slippery specially yung road going south from amorsolo entrance (don bosco), dun sa may sharp curve. ingat lang and keep your headlights/foglights open tsaka hazard lights.

This is another sad story for driver inexprience. Too bad the lesson was a fatal one.

Aqua planning occurs when tires could not flush out water fast enough. This occurs at highspeeds. Once you loose it just ease up on the gas pedal and resume speed after you feel you have control again. Never ever brake because it will lock up the tires and cause uncontrollable spin.

Avoid large puddles of water on one side of the vehicle. It is better that aqua plane occurs on both sides than on one side. If one side of the vehicle hits 2 inches of water at high speed resulting to aquaplanning, the drag on that side will induce the vehicle to yaw/veer to the slow side. This will cause the vehicle to spin in the direction of the aquaplanning side. If you have an SUV with a high center of gravity - roll over occurs. Most puddles of water accumulate at the inner and outer lanes gutters, approach and exit of fly overs, bridges, hills, underpasses. Watch out for these infrastuctures.

To prevent aqua planning, reduce speed during heavy downpours. Know the performance characteristics of your tires during wet driving and don't exceed it. Most tires can handle speeds up to 90kph hitting puddles of 1 to 2 inches. If the puddle of water is long and deep, ease up on the pedal and steer vehicle at the edge where it is shallower. Be aware of other vehicles around you so that oyur evasive action will not cause collision. Increase your distance between vehicles to give you time to react if something happens to the vehicle in front.

I hope this information helps for the new drivers.

thanks for the great info Sir Rodski...I was about to ask the aqua planning hehe

Pwede po bang mag 4H when this flood occurs? like 1-2inches deep of water? lalu na sa NLEX lagi baha pag misan magugulat ka nalang na hihilahin ang wheel mo

Parang nakita ko sa PAJERO owners manual that you can do that, when raining?

    thanks

Glenn, from experience, putting it in 4 wheel doesn't help control or prevent aqua planning. pag may tubig sa one side talagang hihilain ang gulong moo to one side. kung masyado ka mabilis aangat talaga ang gulong.

try ko to b4 in my gen 1. drive ako mabilis then hit water half a foot deep. if i maintain around 70 ang front tires ko useless. mafeel mo na kahit anong liko mo sa steering wheel parang pag nakapatong sa jackstand ang auto.
the car will turn using the front tires like a rudder pero i advise against it. eventually or pag sobra input sa manibela you lose control. ginagawa ko lang ito nung nag research ako for school about it. paulitulit kami sa tubig.

The deeper the water the lower the speed required to aqua plane. usually 70 to 80kph depending on tire size and tread pattern. Ang gamit namim 31x10.5 AT at 6 inches of water.

Parang nabasa ko sa 4x4 mag ng japanese. A japanese 4x4 expert said that manual 4x4s shouldnt be sold to inexperienced drivers.

Kalimutan ko ang explanation nya pero im certain that he states that putting it in 4h will do more harm than good.

sakit na siguro ng ibang drivers yan... kahit malakas ang ulan, harurot pa rin.... i guess wet pavements and speed dont really mix

For high performance driving in the rain a full time all wheel drive vehicle with traction control is best suited.

Traction control system balances the spin on the individual tires to prevent yaw/veering on the side with slippery surface. This MINIMIZES the spin towards the slippery side. This is controlled by computer so reaction is faster then human reflexes.

Unfortunatly traction control is found in high performance cars and SUVs. It is an expensive option.

4H at high speed tarmac driving should be done only by highly experienced drivers because they have faster reflexes and better judgment (wiser).

I believe this holds true on pavement with loose gravel/sand courtesy of construction trucks.

Yes, pwede ka mag-4H sa Pajero kapag umuulan kasi may center differential ito (most other trucks are direct-drive). It will not help you in stopping but it does make handling more neutral dahil less ang tendency mag-power-oversteer (yung pumapalo ang pwet).

Hmmm. I went through a zigzag on the same day in more horrific rain conditions on my way to Lemery Batangas sa Fantasy World. Iba talaga naka 4H! Although aquaplaning is determined by how fast youre going, how good your tires are and how deep the water is, having 4H will give you way way better grip on the road, period.
