LSD or Lockable rear diff?

Question:
If the LC has a rear lock diff switch on the panel, then is it safe to assume that it can't have a limited slip diff at the same time? Is it either one in use- LSD or rear locker- but never both?

The service guys at Toyota recommend using LSD oil but don't think it has one. Does a lockable rear diff need LSD oil?

IMO, I don't think so. LSD contains clutch type materials that needs special oil to create friction effect. Locking diff, like in our Safaris uses ordinary gear oils.

usually it's either a locking diff or an open diff, but there are locking LSD units available, like the diff unit in the wrangler rubicon (locking LSDs are more common as center diffs).

I think it's an either/or thing.

ARB lockers are either open or locked. But the new Electrac, is Limited when unlocked and locked when on.

Do you think using LSD gear oil would make a difference in longevity in an open or locking diff? Some say using a synthetic gear oil (like Mobilube SHC 75w90) would be better than a mineral LSD gear oil in such a case.

If you weighed benefits vs. cost, you're still better off using conventional gear oil + LSD additive than fully synthetic.

Judging from the description of this product, it appears that an LSD rear can co-exist with a rear diff Locker. Please check the following site .

Yes, if you have the fr/rr diff locker switch on the left side of dashboard, then yes, you have the locking fr/rr diffs.

See the alpha-numeric stuff for Trans/Axle ? That means transmission is A343 (4-speed auto) while the axle is an open diff with a 3.36 ring & pinion ratio. If the axle code said "A04" or something like that, then it's got locking diffs; or if the last number was a "3", then limited slip.

No. But LSD can help reduce some chattering noise (if you notice, that is), and can help your open diffs behave like a limited-slip diff somewhat as the oil turns viscous when there is a great speed difference between the left and right wheels. LSD oil is also pricier.
