I'm not really sure where that piston ring case is located. All I know is, parts from top part are valve cover, cylinder head, cylinder head gasket then engine block.

Common remedy for leaks are high-temp sealants, but most color I've seen and used is colored red. Kung sa valve cover may tagas, usual 8 bolt pattern yan.
