when your car reaches a speed where it creates turbulence underchassis, the exhaust fumes are forced into openings under the floor of the car. one of these openings is the space where the shifter cable runs through the floor to the shifter stick. the other one is the parking brakes aperture. both of these two usually have rubber boots(most of the time two, one upper and one lower) to prevent dust, fumes and noise coming through theses holes on the floor. if this car is equipped with manual transmission, it may have an additional hole where the clutch linkage or hydraulics would pass through the firewall. check the floor and the firewall for rust through penetration.
Choice I would have made as well.
