Heroes' welcome for returning OFWs
Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) arriving home for the holidays will be given a warm welcome by the government starting Thursday until Christmas day, DZMM reported.
Representatives from Malacañang, the Department of Labor, Philippine Overseas Employment Agency, and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration are set to receive the first batch of OFWs this Thursday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1, which is expected to arrive at 10 a.m. from Hong Kong.
The program, which started in 1996, is usually implemented by the government two weeks before Christmas, when more OFWs are expected to come home to spend the holidays with loved ones.
Dollar remittances from OFWs have jumped more than 10 percent to $741.16 million in October owing to the increase in the deployment of skilled and professional workers and the expansion of remittance channels abroad.
Data released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Wednesday showed cumulative 10-month migrants’ remittances shoot up to $6.93 billion, or 9.5 percent higher than last year’s. This is just $1.1 billion short of the government’s target of a 6-percent growth rate for the full year or about $8.1 billion.
The BSP said the growth trend would be sustained during November and December, the start of the pouring in of remittances for the holiday season.

December 16th, 2004 10:03 PM #3daming basic needs ng mga ofws kilangan maatupag ng gobyerno..anoh..?
just a few:

December 18th, 2004 01:22 AM #7dati nga, me banda pa. tapos, pag da-an mo sa gate ng customs, tatanungin ka "wala ba for the boys?".

speaking of OWWA at medicare na yan.... Pag nag fill up kayo ng papers me portion doon na tinatanong ang duration ng contract ninyo. TIP ko ilagay nyo indefinite... dahil automatic and OWWA insurance nyo ay valid for two years. Pag nilagyan mo kasi ng date for one year lang one year lang din ang validity noon.
Ang mahal pa man din ng insurance nayon 1,275 pesos, kaya dapat imaximize ang validity two years. Nagkamali kasi ako rito eh nilagay ko ang work rotation ko kaya ginawa nila valid for one year lang tsk tsk tsk..... Kaya bayad uli ako sa January ng 1,275
