hello patrol owners, recently we aquired a 2001 gu manual patrol. we use it everyday and drove it long distances already and everything seems fine. the problem is this: ever since we got it (about three months ago) coolant needs to be added, about half a tabo of water in a week (refilled in the reservoir), it seems minimal pero "modern cars" cars almost never need to be refilled withy coolant. and i cant seem to find any signs of leakage anywhere (new rad cap, clean hose ends,no signs of leaks), i tried to look everywhere under all engine conditions...any suggestions guys? thanks.
...while am here already might as well ask, when i turn off the engine, upon turning the ignition off there is a delay in the actual engine turning off, about a second, is this normal?
...and another thing, sometimes upon starting the engine(of course wait for plugs to heat) when it starts, parang kinikapos at mamamatay for a few seconds, then it idles ok na. other than that, the patrol is a nice ride....any thoughts on how to rectify these probs are greatly appreciated...THANKS GUYS.
hello. i don't own a patrol but i did own a pajero diesel few years ago that had the same initial problems as yours.
if you're sure na walang leaks, you may want to invest on long life coolant so your coolant now (which could be just plain water) won't easily boil away. flush and refill. first few weeks after i refilled mine ganyan din kala ko may tagas, pero i think it's just air trapped in the radiator when i first flushed it. eventually the radiator burped it off and hindi na nagbawas.
the 4d56 diesel, especially the old ones, had a long rattle after you've killed the ignition. mine was a second, sometimes a bit more after being used on a long hot journey. i like to think of this as normal. perhaps a delay in the fuel pump.
after a cold night i usually had trouble either starting my diesel engine, or it would sputter first few seconds to a minute of driving. mine had white smoke pa nga eh. pinned that problem down to worn glowplugs not igniting the compresed fuel/air. replaced the glowplugs, problem went away.
i just got a diesel super safari a few weeks back... its has just clocked approx. 600kms
i just wanted to ask patrol gurus here; is it normal for the housing of the air filter to feel oily to touch?
on my other diesel rigs this usually does not happen unless if i install a finer filter which is an oil type air filter
thanks in advance.
volts, thanks for the reply, re the sometimes "kinakapos" upon start up, like you said, learned also from someone its probably the glow plugs, one could be dead or something...il deal with it as soon as i can.
more inquiry guys, i had gas engines all my life, this i the first time i had a diesel, of course which is the patrols'. i know diesels here in the phil have a tendency to smoke for whatever reasons, my paulit ulit question is that what are the basic things to do to lessen the black smoke? thanks again.
bwn, the 'kinakapos' upon initial startup in the morning may be due to a dirty fuel filter. When was the last time your fuel filters were replaced?
The delay in the shutting off of the engine is common to Patrols. This may be because it is drive-by-wire, hence, the signal from the ignition switch will have to be processed first by the ECU, and then sent to the engine to be shut off.
As for your black smoke question, don't worry about this. The Patrol is not a smoke belcher. It will only emit black smoke when something is not functioning properly, like a broken MAF sensor.
Thanks for the info...new patrol owner yes but only up to this week....
will update you guys early next week
XXXXXXXXX XXXXXX corp. already cooked me up a sweet deal
we agreed that everything would be settled this week as long as i keep my mouth shut
if not just read goon squad by monday![]()
Good day patrol gurus.
I would like to ask for some tips/ things to look in buying a patrol. Right now I'm targeting a 2002 Patrol M/T - Mileage is around 80Km.
TIA.
The TB48 is an inline-6 and superior to the ZD30 diesel in terms of power and torque... We've been playing around with one at the Service Center. I feel that it's still short on power because there's really no such thing as too much hp. The Y61 with the TB48 has a governed speed of around 205kph. It has a very restrictive central muffler that just begs to be removed. Since it's backed by a 5-sp auto unlike the 4-sp auto behind the diesel, axle gears are a wimpy 3.55. The 1st gear of the 5sp auto is lower than then 1st gear of the 4sp auto so Nissan thought 3.55s would do. It does for most people but we want to overtake Honda Civics and burn rubber.
Ok on the autobahn but not the best ratio to maximize the torque of the 4.8-liter TB48. Hence, we re-geared to 4.375 and dropped an ARB locker in for good measure. Dropping 4.375 gears behind the 5-sp auto is like installing 4.88s on units with 4-sp autos. The change in acceleration is just night-and-day with the new low gears but it also creates a 23% speedo error. This is how we saw 205kph on the speedo that I repeated it 4 times on the highway. The ECU abruptly cuts power power at an indicated 205kph but, in reality, we were only going 165kph.
A 205 kph limit on a slightly lifted Patrol is fine if we were really going that fast. Shutting the fun at only 165kph is just plain rude.
Now for exhaust mods and speed-limiter removal.... If we can't correct the speedo then might as well remove the governor. Any ideas?
Hi new super safari owner here. Got a diesel A/T one month ago. Had my 1k PMS at Quezon Ave.
By the way, shell helix ang nilagay nilang oil.
Salamat!

Hi! I have a 2001 patrol w/ 130k km. brought it to Nissan Pasong Tamo and was diagnosed with the following major repairs:
1. need to replace intercooler/leak
2. replace valve cover gasket
3. replace 4 pcs injector oil seal
4. replace drivebelt & auto tensioner
5. rep turbo hose/big/crack
6. need ti replace all door hinges
7. need to check front wheel bearing
the intercooler alone was quoted at P70,000 total quote was at a whooping P141k++ (Diyos ko po)
need your help guys. Saan po yung cnasabi nyo na pinagdalhan sa taft, maybe I need a second opinion.
tia
you definitely need a 2nd opinion. i was also quoted 70k for the intercooler leak sa pasong tamo. dont let them do the "patch up work" which is to epoxy your whole intercooler. it doesnt work. im currently having mine done at erl motorwerx. pwede nila i weld yng leaks kung de na talaga kaya they can fabricate a new one for u ( buy a new intercooler core tas attach it to your old endtanks). sure de lalampas ng 20k depends on the damage. also, you could try to find a surplus intercooler
checkout this link. dami contact numbers of shops for nissan parts try calling them up.
