Most drive by wire throttle systems also now sense brake pedal application and retard engine power automatically.
Nissan has been doing it for quite a while. Toyota followed suit after the Lexus incident. Again, I haven't checked if the Monty is drive by wire but it should have a similar logic if it is. At least something good comes out of these sudden acceleration claims.
I'd just like to add that I agree with niky on all his points.

If that's the case, Mitsu should be able to check parameters concerning throttle position through their diagnostic equipment. That is if their ECU's store this information.

Diba sa Monty you could turn-off and release the car key even in 'D' position?

January 18th, 2012 07:40 PM #6Watch the TV show Manibela every Friday 4:30PM to 5:00PM and Sunday 5:00PM to 5:30PM on UNTV (for live internet streaming click http://www.untvweb.com/en/webcast.html, UHF Channel 37, Sky Cable Channel 33 & 58, Destiny Cable & Dream Satellite Channel 9).
Last week the car show featured the doctor who was on the driver seat of his Montero that suddenly accelerated from a parked position and then crashed into a pharmacy in Cavite. JP Tuason from the Tuason Racing School and a Technical Manager from Rapide were the expert resource persons. More complainants will be featured on the show this Friday and Sunday according to a friend who shared me this blog http://monterovictims.blogspot.com

January 20th, 2012 12:50 AM #9And, no matter how fast the car is running, you can shove the shifter into Neutral from Drive at any time.[/QUOTE]
well, i didn't think of shifting the lever to neutral. what i did, was to lift my right foot and stepped on the brakes. this is what happened:
a few weeks ago, i was driving (not a montero, but a lancer) at a moderate speed, when i had to slow down and so stepped on the brake. but instead of slowing down, the car even picked up speed! i stepped (pumped? i forget..) on the brakes even more, but the car speeded up even more! it was then that my brain started thinking: "you're stepping on the accelerator pedal, you numbskull! lift your right foot and move it a little to the left and step on the pedal!" ...and the car slowed down to a halt..
all this happened in the space of a few seconds... i have been driving for over 20 years, and until today, thinking back and analyzing it slowly, i could still swear i was stepping on the brake... i was lucky the car's AT automatically downshifted and minimized the car's acceleration..Last edited by dr. d; January 20th, 2012 at 12:58 AM.

Lucky you had the time.
I have a different problem. I never mistake the accelerator for the brake, because I've learned, over the years, to use two feet to brake in an emergency. SOP for track addicts... in an emergency, both feet to the floor. If you're in an automatic, that means both will be on the brake. If you're in a manual, one will be on the brake and one will be on the clutch (keeping the engine from dying when you stop).
No, my problem is that sometimes, in an automatic, I hit the brake when I'm going for the (phantom) clutch and sometimes when I'm going for the gas (used to having my foot hover between the gas and brakes in order to heel and toe).
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
For modern cars, the EPS seems to be more ubiquitous as the traditional engine-driven PSF...
