EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Blowby gasses in the cylinder head are passed onto the intake manifold to be part of the intake mixture.
As far as i can recall....
For gas engines, this is done to lower pollution levels (I think ;) ) For diesels, wala lang hehehe. Inert naman yung blowby gases e (ng diesel ha).

It is for lowering pollution levels.
Sort of like eating your own $hit again so that you can digest it more.
