For me if you can't afford an SUV, the MPV maybe the best option. You get some features that would be common to an SUV like high ground clearance, a bigger seating capacity (7 seater), more leg, elbow and headroom perhaps compared to a typical sedan. Though diesel variants will be rare.

The subcompact sedan maybe but not the compact or midsize sedans. A Civic or Altis will offer a better ride than any if these affordable MPVs.
