I strongly believe that there is no such thing as absolute freedom. Rules are made for us to enjoy life to the fullest. However, we don't like rules and we find ways to go around it so as to go against it.
Let's say that you are watching basketball and I'm one of the players. Knowing the rules, will you enjoy watching the game if I were to hug the ball and run all the way and shoot it? You might ask, why would I do that? My answer will be, I believe in freedom and I'm absolutely free to do with whatever I want.
Going back to your post, perhaps they believe that it is their bodies and they are free to do whatever they want with it. And so I've read,
"All things are lawful," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up.

I can't say it's popular, but, some people do take these studies at face value or as a matter of "fact" without a dose of skeptism just because a scientist from such and such university said so. It's not a crime doubting so called authority.
The last study I read made me laugh because they claim that sitting for a long time can cause diabetes. If this was really true, then, we would see a diabetes epidemic among office workers who sits on the chair all day. We simply don't see that.
Studies are simply an ongoing investigation - connecting the dots game. Nothing is conclusive yet and people are free to refute it.
As for "living the la vida loco", as long as it's not excessive, just have fun and live life. It's just alcohol and it tends to improve social bonding and enhances positive emotions among people.
Perhaps, the study should be pointed at alcoholics and not the casual/occasional drinker.
Re: "they walk. a lot. not as programmed activity (exercise), but as activities of daily living. that is why, as a people, japanese are not fat."
Walking does not really consume that much calories though. The subway stations there are not that far. The farthest I've walked was around 10mins. Most are just 5-6 mins walk. On daily average, I would say, at least 30mins walk total. It's really the amount of food they consume which is not that much because of their really busy and stressful lifestyle with not much sleep. A ramen or udon for lunch and a bento for dinner from a convenience store are not calorie laden as compared to a western triple cheeseburger, french fries, sundae, with upsized coke diet.
Fuel in=Fuel out
It's really about the calories.
Re: HIV/AIDS
If one lives a promiscous lifestyle, then, you're really asking for it. I once caught two gay men doing it in a public restroom. Gross. There are kids using the restroom for goodness sake. A security saw them and took action.
I don't pretty much care what other people do with their private lives. Like as if we have perfect lives to tell them what to do, like good girls and boys. They are adults and they are fully aware of what they are doing and the consquences thereof. Their lives, their sh1t. We need population control anyway. lol
Maybe, with kids we can teach them. But, this is the internet age and good luck with that.
