Press Statement:
Quezon City, 01 May 2014
El Niņo Watch:
PAGASA has been closely monitoring the oceanic and atmospheric conditions in the tropical Pacific that could lead to possible development of an El Niņo. A majority of climate models indicate that El Niņo may develop this year. El Niņo is characterized by unusually warm ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific (CEEP).
The sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) over the tropical Pacific remained to be El Niņo Southern Oscillation (ENSO)- neutral during the past several months. The established threshold of SSTA for an El Niņo phenomenon is 0.5°C or higher during a three-month period.
PAGASA has already noted significant increase in the SSTA from 0.2 to 0.4 C from April 21 to April 28, 2014. Because of this development and as climate models predict that this condition may persist for the next nine months, PAGASA is foreseeing the onset of El Niņo in June which may peak during the last quarter of 2014 and may last up to the first quarter of 2015.
El Niņo could affect the normal rainfall pattern in the country generally resulting in reduced rainfall. Different parts of the country may experience varying rainfall impacts. PAGASA will be furnishing monthly rainfall outlook for six months for the different parts of the country.
The country could still experience normal number of tropical cyclone this year. However, El niņo causes the behavior of tropical cyclones to become erratic, affecting its tracks and intensity. The tropical cyclone tracks are expected to shift northward and its intensity could become stronger.
PAGASA will continue to closely monitor the tropical Pacific and updates/advisories shall be issued as appropriate. Concerned agencies are advised to take precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impacts of this phenomenon.

PAGASA: Hot weather to persist in PHL until mid-May
May 8, 2014 6:45am
After Metro Manila recorded another 36-degree day on Wednesday, state weather forecasters on Thursday said the public may have to bear with very hot weather at least until mid-May.
PAGASA forecaster Alvin Pura said the temperature in Metro Manila on Wednesday had gone up to 36.2 degrees Celsius.
The easterlies or warm winds from the east will remain the dominant weather system affecting the country.
Pura said the second half of May could see more frequent rain that would bring relief from the heat.
"Sa first and second week may mainit, then (maaaring) madalas ang ulan ... Inaasahan natin (na) mas mababa (ang temperature after second week of May) dahil sa pasulpot-sulpot na thunderstorm," he also said in the interview on dzBB radio. — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News

The temperature in Metro Manila hit 36.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday (May 17), just a few percentage points away from the highest recorded temperature this year of 36.5 degrees Celsius on May 11.
High temperatures and high humidity will persist in most parts of the country due to the ridge of high pressure extending across Luzon.
That system, associated with good weather and warm conditions, also kept temperatures up in the Metro Manila weather stations on Sunday (May 18) with 35.8 degrees Celsius in Science Garden and 38.2 in NAIA in Pasay City.
Also on Sunday (May 18), temperatures peaked at 38.9 in Cabanatuan and at 38 in Tuguegarao.

This administration had the most number of exodus in this part of goverment. From the moment Abnoy fired director Nilo, everyone followed to show they are not afraid of a moronic president's move. And why not, there's greener opportunity outside the country while over here, their under paid and delayed benefits because of political clowns from DBM, DOST & Malacanang.
Akala ko Nilo Cruz resigned. In any case, i think it worked out for him.
Anyways, is there really any wonder why we keep losing good people? Mag stay ka nga dito out of some sense of nationalism, babaratin ka naman sa sweldo, kulelat ang mga gamit, titira-tirahin ka pa ng presidente. imho PAGASA failed because the PH government failed it first.
And now we're expecting more extreme weather in the future? Good luck na lang talaga sa atin, manood na lang tayo ng CNN for weather updates.
