July 15th, 2017 01:13 PM #7This is the fourth straight day we had thunderstorms and strong rain showers. Good thing we got our road trip out of the way. Monsoon season also means dust storm season, especially between Phoenix and here. Reminds me of haboobs in the Middle East. I saw quite a few of them too in the now distant past.
The ones near Phoenix were particularly nasty with visibility dropping to maybe 1 meter within a matter of seconds. I know it's one meter because that's how close I got to the tail lights of the car ahead of me before I recognized it. It's just as bad as thick fog in California's Sacramento Valley.
California Valley Fog (from above)..... Very nasty, especially at night.

July 17th, 2017 06:54 AM #14The steering flow has been from the northeast which means most thunderstorms over the mountains will weaken due to the downsloping terrain. We might see some isolated thunderstorms form strictly from surface heating. But, they tend to be less violent than those on an upslope path.
Nothing like yesterday when the steering flow was upslope and the outflow from the old thunderstorms would collide with each other and form new thunderstorms, resulting in almost continuous lightning and showers.
Definitely much quieter today with just a few sprinkles. Still, it's the 6th straight day with rain. Good.
It is surprising to know we don't depend on Lake Mead (farther north, see photo on July 10 post) for our water. We sit on top of a large underground aquifer which is almost full right now. I only need to dig 1-2 inches and the ground becomes moist. No wonder there's no water restrictions here.
Phoenix depends on Lake Mead. If Lake Mead dries out then Phoenix will become a ghost town. The new state capital might move here.

July 16th, 2017 09:28 PM #15Yesterday afternoon through the evening was quite interesting. Thunderstorms one after the other, damaging winds, blown down trees, hail, dust storms, even a landspout. It was a good time to be home.
Landspout tornado the other day. Pretty weak. But, it was still strong enough to flip over cars that venture too close:

July 22nd, 2017 12:30 AM #20Interesting. As of 8 am here, the temperature is at 80F with a humidity of 69%. It's also 80F (11 pm) with a humidity of 96% at Manila.
I did a short walk earlier. It was just humid enough to give me a good sweat.
It might be hard to believe. But, it feels good to be sweating without exerting much.
When it's too dry to sweat, it's often hard to tell if I'm dehydrated. By the time I feel thirsty, I'm already experiencing heat exhaustion.Last edited by Jun aka Pekto; July 22nd, 2017 at 12:36 AM.
