This is what a lot of people don't realize. Erap's case, in comparison, was by no means a precedent. He could have held his ground in the Palace to the last man, if he was as tough and hard-nosed as his characters in his bad movies....the Constitution says, the President can resign, indeed, but she cannot be forcibly asked to resign.
But no, he gave in, and left. His choice. Thus his successor was legally recognized as head of the republic, to the chagrin of a lot of people (including myself). But such is the law, the very same law that Cory Aquino now cites in her call for GMA to resign. She, of all people, who should know exactly how it feels to be a president under siege, on account of all those coup attempts. How quickly Mrs. Aquino forgets, to the extent that she plants herself firmly on the same side as those whom her administration displaced in 1986.
However one calls it (resignation, leave of absence, etc.), Erap fled to save his thick hide, plain and simple, no matter how much he or his minions protest this to their graves.
Gloria hangs tough and stays in the Presidency. Same thing. It's her rightful choice as the incumbent president. She only ought to step down when someone, anyone, has already proven beyond all shadow of a doubt that she doesn't belong there in the first place.
