DIGITAL Telecommunication Philippines (Digitel) has complained to the National Telecommunications Commission about the high incidence of failure of calls and text messages from its Sun Cellular service to Smart Communication phones.
In a letter to the NTC dated March 9, Digitel said 89 percent of Sun Cellular calls to Smart phones failed to connect, and many text messages sent through Sun Cellular phones to Smart phones were not received.
It said during peak hours on March 1 and 6, almost 25 percent of text messages from Sun to Smart failed and 40 percent of messages from Smart to Sun did not go through.
"About 89 percent of outgoing calls from Sun to Smart were rejected by Smart due to 'unavailability of circuit/channel,'" said Digitel senior vice president William Pamintuan.
Sun Cellular is the trade name of Digitel Mobile Philippines Inc., a unit of Digitel.
Smart head of legal department Rogelio Quevedo said Sun Cellular should not blame other networks for its problems.
"Sun Cellular's network is really congested," he said. "Now they are blaming us for their own congestion."
Pamintuan said Digitel had asked Smart to activate five additional signaling links last Dec. 17 because of SMS congestion experienced at that time.
Smart has yet to act on the request, he said.
"These intermittent voice call and SMS links failure have been adversely affecting our network efficiency to the detriment and prejudice of our Sun Cellular subscribers," he said.
