In our neck of the woods, we learned from the last eruption and have prepared accordingly.

Measures now are geared towards mitigating the damage as much as possible as well as being ready for the clean up to follow.

Volcanic earthquakes are down by an average of 2 per day in the past 3 days.

However, tremor episodes continue to increase but still way below the triple digits recorded last 4 March.

Overall, while there is still no preceptible trend towards normal status, Taal seems to be calming down.

Volcanic Earthquakes

From the latter article:

"Earthquakes produced by stress changes in solid rock due to the injection or withdrawal of magma (molton rock) are called volcano-tectonic earthquakes (Chouet, 1993). These earthquakes can cause land to subside and can produce large ground cracks. These earthquakes can occur as rock is moving to fill in spaces where magma is no longer present. Volcano-tectonic earthquakes don't indicate that the volcano will be erupting but can occur at anytime."

"The second category of volcanic earthquakes are long period earthquakes which are produced by the injection of magma into surrounding rock. These earthquakes are a result of pressure changes during the unsteady transport of the magma. When magma injection is sustained a lot of earthquakes are produced (Chouet, 1993). This type of activity indicates that a volcano is about to erupt. Scientists use seismographs to record the signal from these earthquakes. This signal is known as volcanic tremor."

Phivolcs only started reporting both volcanic earthquakes and tremor episodes in its bulletin last 14 February.

Before that, they reported only on volcanic earthquakes.

From my layman's point of view, having one or the other or both are causes for concern.

Hopefully, the numbers will go down until it is back to normal, meaning 0 for both just like Bulusan.

It'll be long while till it goes back to normal status. Especially as the tremors are getting longer in duration. Its not just the quantity of earthquakes but the quality (type, magnitude, duration). Mayon last erupted in 2018 and its still abnormal till now. I remember Taal at Alert Level 1 in 2005 and it lasted for almost 10 years. But again as long as you are not on the island, you should be safe.

A tremor episode is a volcanic earthquake. Its just a distinct type of volcanic earthquake. Most volcanic earthquakes are relatively short-lived, less than 5 second duration associated with breaking rocks or a popping gas bubble or explosion. Tremor episodes however are long duration, lasting from a minute to sometimes hours., can be due to popping of many gas bubbles, boiling water at depth and causing a vibration in a conduit.
