I’m reminded of an entry in “A Diary of the Japanese Occupation” by Father Juan Labrador, published by the UST press:

There were rumors that the advancing Japanese had poisoned Manila’s water supply. Not too long afterwards, some folks started complaining of stomach pains.” (Note: the rumors turned out to be false)

79 years later, ganyan pa rin mga tao, mas mabilis lang kumalat ang balita and speculation ngayon.

I'm not sure if volcanic eruptions and earthquakes can be predicted that far in advance with current technology yet.

I remember reading something about in Japan, minutes before lang ang alert warning nila for an earthquake. (But those few minutes can matter though). As for yung volcanoes, kahit may obvious signs (swelling at the base, steam and ash billowing out) so may alert levels raised, but no one can tell when and if its actually going to erupt or not.

Any geologist on the forum is free to correct me on this.

    i'm not a geologist.
but i think the science of volcanology is still (for lack of a better word) crude.
even now, after all that's happened since sunday, the experts still can't say with certainty, what the volcano is going to do, next.

because we still have no way of looking at what's actually happening below where the magma is. all we can do is observe signs and events and make intelligent guesses/predictions based on scientific and historical data.

Noong araw kasi doc ang turo sa school, scientists can predict volcanic eruptions.

Pero earthquake di talaga nila kaya i-predict.

Yun pala, kahit volcanic eruptions may limitation ang prediction ng mga scientists.

Si Solidum ng Phivolcs sabi di rin nila alam kung what's going to happen next and more importantly, when it's going to happen.

Oh well... sabi nga .. it's really hard to make predictions, especially about the future.

    Waiting for the big boom...

Which could happen in hours, days or weeks.

In a press conference, the agency further explained that fissuring on the caldera region means that the top of the volcano has been depressurized and the high volume of magma continues to rise, which will result in an explosive eruption.

“Ito pong fissures na ito or fractures, ito po ay nangyari din nung 1911 na pagputok ng bulkan bago po nagprogress sa climactic o explosive eruption,” said Ma. Antonia Bornas, chief of Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division.

(These fissures, the same happened in the 1911 eruption of the volcano before it progressed into a climactic or explosive eruption.)

Phivolcs also noted that another indication of an impending explosive eruption is the intense seismic activity or the 335 volcanic earthquakes recorded since Taal’s phreatic eruption on Sunday afternoon until 10 a.m. Tuesday.

According to Phivolcs, they have recorded earthquakes as strong as 4.1-magnitude since January 12. It said such a degree of tremor from inside the earth is considered powerful for a volcanic earthquake.

Meron akong napanood na video, it happened new Zealand, tourist attraction ang island and some tourist went there pa and then the volcano erupted, 6 dead, buti na lang yung iba nakasakay na ng boat paalis but yung iba was not that lucky, you really can't predict when mother nature will fight back.
