Should the Philippines reconsider nuclear power?

Reasons:

- expensive cost of power generation using existing power plants (world's most expensive electric rates)

- expensive cost of power generation using renewable "green" sources (wind, solar, etc)

- safe nuclear power station designs available.

- "safer" alternative nuclear fuel possible through use of "Thorium" (more plentiful ore, less nuclear waste)

- alternatives to long term storage for nuclear waste is possible (using atomic alchemy)

- past nuclear accidents happened on very old nuclear stations including the 40 year old Fukushima nuclear power station. Most existing older stations have upgraded their systems to present safety standards.

I think it is usually privately owned and operated but with a government contract for a guarantee purchase for the electricity it would produce.

The problem is our current administration is going for the "green solution" for power. That means investments more towards renewable power solutions like solar and wind. Unfortunately, with the same "green solutions" come with a big price tag. Also these solutions are mostly unreliable to generate power uninterrupted over a day.

Personally I do like renewable power solutions but they are not matched to the economic reality of the Philippines.

I think that it is the way to go, in spite of all the risks....

Matter >>> Energy...

i'm not against nuclear energy but sometimes the obvious solutions are the last to be looked at, and more so not considered. if people will only learn to conserve energy then not only will energy bills go down, there would also be no need for more nuclear plants and there would also be less CO2. if you disconnect all unused electrical appliances (especially remote controlled appliances like tv sets, aircons, etc.), if you use pl lamps (or better yet led lamps, mahal lang nga), arrange the most needed items at the front of the refrigerator so the doors are not opened for a long time. for those with air conditioning you can turn the ac thermostat just a tad higher, use heavy curtains on south facing windows or even use tinted windows, or put an awning on windows so the sun does not shine directly into the rooms. the reasoning is very simple and that is we can't possibly say we do not have enough and having enough is expensive when we are wasting it. tama ba?

I'm open to the idea.

Sa lahat naman ng aspect in life with great power comes great responsibility (and electricity).

even if we dont use the electricity generated, the government is obligated to buy and pay the powerplants the operating cost. Even if the powerstation is idle, the government is paying them, which in turn is passed to users. Hence the unbelievable high electric rates.

No amount of "saving electricity" will save us from the immediate problem of rising electric rates. Might as well turn on the a/c and enjoy a cool break from the tropical heat.

Yes!
Go Nuke!
Noon pa decades ago I believe na sa idea.
Its for a long term power generation kasi.
cheaper production cost = cheaper food and consumer goods

what are the chances of nuke power will ever get off the ground here?

environmentalists have infiltrated the govt

environmentalists ARE already in govt

they'll shoot it down

they'll block it every step of the way

they'll use Fukushima as an example to scare pinoys

popular opinion will be against nuke power

it's not gonna happen

Yes please. Power rates are so high. Maybe we can get more jobs from new investors for all the displaced OFWs if power rates are brought down. Notice that all the industrialized nations have nuke power.

Environmentalists should understand that living itself is not green. All the products we consume from infancy takes power to make. Even if everyone just takes the jeep or MRT to work and uses electricity sparingly we are still using power mostly generated from coal and diesel. Factor in our population growth rate and you get the idea how fast pollution will get from bad to worse. If you are an environmentalist you should fully support the RH bill.
