Appeared in the Inquirer today, RIP

Tabloid publisher dead in motorcycle mishap

Last updated 05:12am (Mla time) 01/11/2007

THE publisher of a weekly tabloid was killed and his reporter slightly injured when the motorcycle they were riding on collided with a 10-wheel truck on Road-10 in North Bay Boulevard South, Navotas on Tuesday afternoon.

Dead on the spot was Joey Sacdalan, 46, publisher of the tabloid Headlines. His reporter, Roberto Illut, 38, suffered minor injuries.

According to Insp. Erwin de Guzman of the Traffic Enforcer Group, Sacdalan was killed when the motorcycle he was driving hit the truck and then slid underneath the vehicle. The truck then ran over him.

De Guzman said the truck and motorcycle were both traveling in the same direction.

He added that Sacdalan, who was on the right side of the road, slammed into the truck when he suddenly swerved to the left to avoid an approaching pedicab.

“He was instantly killed after his motorcycle skidded and went under the truck,” De Guzman said.

Illut, who was riding tandem with Sacdalan, was slightly injured.

“He was able to jump from the vehicle before it went under the moving truck,” De Guzman said.

The driver of the truck, identified as Pablito Gayangos Jr., 42, surrendered to the police.

He was charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.

    Wrong move

A FATAL maneuver claimed the life of a young motorcycle driver early yesterday morning in Muntinlupa City when he lost his balance while overtaking the truck that eventually crushed him to death. Marlon Pagkalinawan Corate, 22, was driving his Honda motorcycle with plate number OZ 8092 on the westbound side of Sucat road in Muntinlupa, when he overtook a Fuso truck from the right at 8:30 a.m. yesterday. Follow-up investigator Andy Campo of the Muntinlupa Traffic Enforcement Unit said Corate might not have seen the pothole on the road, causing the motorcycle driver to lose his balance. “The truck was on the left, and Corate tried to overtake him from the right,” added Campo. The victim then lost his balance and slid under the truck behind him. The-six wheeler truck with plate number UGM 653 was loaded with drinking water and driven by Virgilio Magallanes Ellano. Muntinlupa City police chief Police Supt. Jose Mario Espino said Corate slipped under Ellano’s truck from the right side. “He was run over by the last right wheel of the truck. The impact injured several parts of his body and his head,” Campo said. Julie M. Aurelio

If the Inspector noted that the motorbike rider suddenly swerved to avoid a pedicab... isn't it the pedicab's fault?

Kinda weird if the police say that and still charge the truck driver with homicide (oh, I know, reckless imprudence resulting in... but it's the same thing).

The truck drivers faults were they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't think the law governing this is not right and harsh. But the sad thing is this is the law.

Ako rin, muntik na akong banggain ng motorsiklo, while it was speeding and swerving.

Sorry for this comment.

The damned law has to be changed. The 2 died because of their own disregard for safety and the innocent truck drivers ended up paying the price.

its sad how people die, but yes, its also sad that these drivers gets penalized for something they have no control over.

anyhow, everyday i go home from libis along boni serrano ave, i see a lot of cyclist in between the two opposite lanes and sometimes going on the opposite sides, those who are on the right side of the street have to avoid them from being hit head on...if meron nag crash.i assume police will also file a case again the driver of the car instead of the cylist who in the eyes of the law is counterflowing. hay.. what laws in the philippines.. as they say..only in the philippines

Tsk tsk tsk. Sana ma-abswelto ang truck driver. I've driven some ten wheeler trucks before and believe me, mahirap ang visibility on both sides, especially if smaller vehicles ang katabi.

Pag namatay, reckless imprudence resulting to homicide. Pag na-ospital lang, R.I. resulting to serious physical injuries (pero ina-upgrade to homicide, pag namatay eventually yung biktima).

If those motorcycle riders were just careful, they'd be still alive today.

Motorcycles are becoming menace on the road, especially those being used for deliveries.
