Even video cards get merely incremental upgrades. The biggest upgrade you can give your PC now is an SSD if you're still using conventional hard drives.

I don't mind not having to upgrade. My current PC (AMD FX-8350/4GB GTX 770) is heading towards 3 years old. I usually upgrade the GPU every two years. But, I haven't seen the need. My PC is still good for High/Very High (versus Ultra) in the latest games.

I spent most of my upgrade allowance on my kids' PCs. My eldest got a newer i5 4670k/R9 290x while my youngest got an AMD A10-7850k/GT 730.
