Ayan na...! Pero walang denial na may lesbians sa kanlang student population...

St. Scholastica's College threatens to sue PDI over 'Pugad Baboy'
    By: Tricia Aquino, InterAksyon.com

A letter posted on St. Scholastica's College's official Twitter account bares a threat by the Catholic school to sue Philippine Daily Inquirer should it fail to satisfactorily address the school's protest against what it deemed an offensive comic strip touching on the subject of lesbianism among its students.

Based on the letter, the administrators of St. Scholastica's College, Manila, are threatening to file a lawsuit against the PDI over a "Pugad Baboy" strip that discusses "lesbians" among the school's student population, and perhaps among its religious leaders. PDI has suspended "Pugad Baboy" and its creator, cartoonist Pol Medina Jr., pending an investigation by the paper's readers' advocate.

A screen grab of the letter, attributed to St. Scholastica president Sr. Mary Thomas Prado, OSB, was made public by the school's marketing and communications office, via a Twitter post addressed to the Scholastican community in general.

In a phone interview with InterAksyon.com, the manager of the *stschomla1906 Twitter account through which the letter was posted confirmed that the handle was in fact the official account of the school. The administrators also confirmed that the posted letter came from them. The tweet accompanying the letter read: "Retweet, Scholasticans!"

According to the letter, the school administration sent a correspondence to the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Tuesday, part of which reads: "We protest in the strongest possible terms the way the school was singled out and our Sister-administrators accused of allowing homo***ual relationships between its female students."

It added that school officials are "seeking an audience" with cartoonist Pol Medina Jr., and the person in charge of the comics section of the paper.

"If we will not hear from PDI this week, the lawsuit will be filed. If the dialogue will be arranged, we will be inviting administrators, faculty and students who care about this issue to join us. The entire Sisters' community will be present," the letter continued.

St. Scholastica officials were not available for further comment on the matter, nor to expound on what the nature of its threatened lawsuit will actually be.

A suit of libel. Where, under our law, the truth is not a defense. They can claim it is defamatory, and that the strip alleges that they are performing the illegal act of allowing lesbians to be lesbians.

    Whoops. Di pala illegal yun.

On the other hand... they also have to prove that Pol was defaming a specific person. I don't think you can be charged with libel against an institution.

Inquirer apologizes for offensive comic strip
    5:10 pm | Thursday, June 6th, 2013

MANILA, Philippines–The Philippine Daily Inquirer on Thursday issued an apology for the offensive Pugad Baboy cartoon strip by P.M. Junior.

The comic strip which appeared in the June 4, 2013 issue of the Inquirer went viral in social media and drew mixed reactions from netizens and readers, particularly from the faculty, students and alumni of St. Scholastica’s College which was mentioned in the strip.

The full statement issued by PDI Publisher Raul C. Pangalangan follows:

‘‘The Philippine Daily Inquirer apologizes for the offensive Pugad Baboy cartoon by P.M. Junior on June 4, 2013. In the words of the president of St. Scholastica’s College, “our school was singled out and our Sister-Administrators accused of allowing homo***ual relationships between its female students.

‘‘Our Reader’s Advocate, Elena E. Pernia, has begun an inquiry into this matter. Her preliminary findings show that this cartoon strip had been rejected for its insensitivity when it was submitted in April 2013 but, due to a mix-up in the comics section, was picked up for publication. The Inquirer confirms its commitment to the highest standards of accuracy, fairness and good taste.

‘‘Contrary to erroneous news reports, P.M. Junior was not fired and remains a contributor. Pugad Baboy will not appear in the Inquirer, however, pending further investigation.’’

The Pugad Baboy comic strip has been running in the Inquirer, which is normally regarded as a liberal newspaper, since 1988.

The cartoon offers stinging commentaries on life in the Philippines seen through the eyes of a community composed of obese characters.

In the controversial issue published on Tuesday, characters criticized the hypocrisy of homophobic Christians, while suggesting that all the “beautiful” students and some nuns at St. Scholastica were lesbians.

Founded in 1906, St Scholastica’s College is one of the country’s most prestigious schools for girls.

The school’s president, Sister Mary Thomas Prado, sent a letter of protest to the Inquirer threatening to sue it unless an inquiry was launched.

Pernia told Agence France Presse that the inquiry would look into the editorial processes that allowed the controversial comic strip to appear in the paper, and a decision on the cartoon would be made soon after.—INQUIRER.net, Agence France-Presse
