Actually, brain damage is not due to mary jane.
Marijuana has been found to have little to no clinical side effects (which is why some groups are pushing so hard to legalize it), and does not cause long term damage to the lungs, like tobacco does... it's non-carcinogenic, and... wait for it... non-addictive... (weird, noh?)
AFAIK, from college din, some mj users are pretty okay... nakakagraduate nga with honors pag minsan...
The problem with some mary jane users here is that their suppliers may often mix in other stuff with the marijuana or push other illegal items on them... which ARE bad for your health and very very ADDICTIVE... and it's likely your college mates have fallen prey to these pushers.... otherwise, they just smoke it too damn much and are high all of the time... parang mga lasing yan tuwing pumasok. :freak:
Marijuana's effect on your Brain
Heavy marijuana use can negatively affect one’s mental capacity. When THC accumulates in high concentrations and for long periods of time in the brain, studies show that it can cause memory and learning difficulties. In addition, long-term marijuana use has been associated with distorted perception, problem solving difficulties, and loss of coordination. Some individuals who have chronically used marijuana show little interest in school, work, or other daily activities and appear detached from reality. Some researchers have suggested that heavy use of marijuana over time is responsible for this “amotivational syndrome” – a deadened response to stimulation.
Can people become addicted to marijuana?
Animals have displayed signs of physical withdrawal after being administered extremely high doses of THC and then having the drug abruptly stopped. Human studies have further demonstrated that chronic users experience withdrawal symptoms like anxiety and increased irritability upon cessation of use. While symptoms are less severe than those associated with alcohol or opiates, they still have impact on the individual user. Finally, a notable amount of persons entering drug treatment have reported marijuana as their primary drug of use. This suggests that some individuals may become psychologically dependent upon marijuana.

off-topic To mazdamazda... according to most research, yung occassional use yung walang side effects... the worst effects reported during long term studies (for regular users) are gastric problems.
Sobrang over-use na yata yun kung nag-accumulate na ganuun! Baka walang ginawa buong araw kundi humithit! Although, there are a lot of people like that...
But I agree with the psychological dependence issue. Marijuana is not physically or chemically addictive, but it will likely have the same effect on people with low will-power or addictive tendencies.
