Suspected leader of carnapping gang killed in Makati shootout

MANILA, Philippines – A suspected leader of a car theft ring was killed during a shootout with policemen in Makati City at dawn today, a radio report said.

Ivan Padilla was rushed to the Makati Medical Center but physicians could no longer revive him, the report added.

The report said Padilla was driving a Toyota Vios, believed to be also stolen, when flagged down by the anti-car theft unit of the National Capital Region Police Office around 5 a.m. But instead of stopping, Padilla sped away, prompting lawmen to chase and corner the suspect at the corner of Gen. Luna and Makati Avenue.

Padilla reportedly fired at authorities who retaliated and gunned down the suspect.

Padilla's group is allegedly responsible for theft of several vehicles in Metro Manila in the past days.
