There is that possibility. Improperly sealed cans of lacquer thinner can release enough vapors which can concentrate in the trunk of the car over time. The chances can be higher if the trunk temperatures is hotter (explosion happened at 12 noon).
A small spark from an improper contact from a tail-light can ignite it like a sparkplug.
The explosion will exit through the fold-down rear seats and potentially rupture the containers of the lacquer thinner and spilling the contents into the passenger cabin.
The blast wave creates a momentary overpressure event inside the car's cabin causing the roof and windows to deform and break. (Damage on the door windows seems to be caused by the heat. The doors look as if they were damaged due to attempts at rescue during the actual fire.)
Blast can momentarily stun the victim but not kill nor even do any major damage.
The spilled lacquer thinner will also be ignited by the initial blast.
Fire spreads quickly inside the passenger cabin causing fatal burns to the victim.Last edited by ghosthunter; December 15th, 2009 at 06:39 PM.

A hand grenade would cause more metal tearing damage, especially at the point of explosion.
No shrapnel damage to the car.
Grenade will not cause a fire by itself.
If grenade ruptures the fuel tank, the fire would spread to the sides and rear. There is no signs of fire at those areas.

So this might have caused the damage ...
?
Err ... lack of knowledge can really claim lives. If the driver just didn't place the thinner directly at the sun and seal it PROPERLY then it wont blow. He could've placed it at the floor of the passenger seat.
EDIT :: err. cigar buts has been found - this might be one of the factors which caused the thinner to explode.
