(6TH UPDATE) TYPHOON “Reming” (international codename: Durian) has strengthened into a super typhoon and is expected to hit Metro Manila Friday morning, the state weather bureau said late Wednesday afternoon.
The super howler, packing winds of 195 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 225 kilometers per hour, is expected to make landfall in Catanduanes province in the Bicol region on Thursday morning, Nathaniel Cruz, chief of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather forecasting center, said.
"The storm will hit Metro Manila on Friday morning," Cruz said in a phone interview.
Malacañang, also late Wednesday afternoon, announced the suspension of classes at all levels beginning Thursday in Metro Manila and all other areas affected by the super typhoon.
Public storm signal number 4 was raised in Catanduanes while signal number 3 is in effect over Albay, the Camarines provinces and Polillo Island, PAGASA said in its 5 p.m. weather bulletin.
Signal number 2 was up in Sorsogon, Burias Island, Quezon, and Aurora.
Signal number 1 was raised over Metro Manila, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Rizal, Laguna, Batangas, Romblon, Biliran, Masbate, Marinduque, Mindoro Oriental, and Lubang Island
Residents in low-lying areas were warned to guard against possible flashfloods and landslides and those in coastal areas were alerted against possible storm surges.
"Reming" was last spotted 275 kilometers east southeast of Virac town in Catanduanes province, Cruz said.
In Malacañang, presidential chief of staff Michael Defensor said the suspension of classes was recommended by the National Disaster Coordinating Council.
The areas where classes are suspended are Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Sorsogon, Burias Island, Aurora, parts of Quezon, Northern Samar, Catanduanes, Albay, Camarines, and Polilio Island.
Anthony Golez, spokesman of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), said they have activated the emergency operations center and instructed regional disaster coordinating councils and other concerned agencies to be on the alert.
Golez also appealed to advertisers to put down their billboards and tarpaulins as strong rains are expected to hit Metro Manila.
In late September, typhoon Milenyo, which packed 140 kph winds, swept through the national capital region and surrounding areas, downing scores of billboards, power lines and towers, causing massive blackouts and leaving more than 200 people dead.
Reming is the third super typhoon to hit the Philippines this year after Paeng (Cimaron) and Queenie (Chebi).
It is also the 18th storm to hit the Philippines this year and the fourth in as many months.
