MANILA, Philippines – Five major power plants went on unscheduled shutdowns Wednesday, causing power outages in parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, according to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).
The NGCP said these five power facilities – First Gen’s 1,000-MW Sta. Rita, 500MW San Lorenzo; 647-MW Sual unit; unit of Ilijan gas; and QPPL –| can generate a total of 3,700 megawatts (MW), which is about 45 percent of the total electricity requirements of Luzon.
Cynthia Alabanza, NGCP spokesperson, said the five power facilities shut down starting 2 p.m. today, Wednesday.
The outages can last up four hours, she added. It remains uncertain as to when the power facilities will resume operations.
The power failure also hit Malacaņan Palace, the Commission on Elections headquarters in Palacio del Governador and Camp Aguinaldo.
The Light Railway Transit put “all trains on hold position,” said LRT spokesman Hernando Cabrera.
Reports from the field also showed that power outage has affected Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union Pangasinan, and Batangas.
The power outage struck days before the national and local elections are scheduled to be held on May 13. Voters will be using PCOS machines to cast their ballots.

sobrang load? malabo yun... computed yan... laging malaki ang allowance....
at mag automatic shutdown mga yan.. then mag on ulit..... after a few seconds...
We're actually running very thin Sa reserve, kaya pag meron unschedule down ang isang plant. Malaki effect.
Kaya siguro nag down yun 4 dahil na overload since biglang mag down yun isa.

kung tigil ang ikot how can you restart in a few seconds?
kung may papalitan piesa?
it takes hours

Sa QC naman di nawala ng power, was suprised when I called home to check. Sa Binondo, only half the place lost power. 2 hours + rin before na restored. Yung traffic light sa Recto were back on-line when I passed by. Iba yung story sa Espana to Welcome. Patay lahat ng traffic light, and only one was manned by a lone TE on Lacson-UST. Yung sa Blumentritt nag kagulo naman... Heard on the radio the traffic sa skyway was already on C-5...
Sa Valenzuela walang electricity so I went out of town sa client ko sa Cavite.
