I think the rampant use of photoshop retouching in today's local men's mags (FHM, Maxim, etc) are because of the increased need to get the girls looks up to par with our idea of what is beautiful. Which only makes it more obvious that there is a shortage of cover girls beautiful enough NOT to need a major retouch job.

    Just like Angelika P.

Rumampa sa Maxim's 100 ***iest, last week, naka-jeans at long sleeves. While yung mga kasamahan niya, lahat, naka 2-piece. So ano ibig sabihin nu'n?

dati pa naman retokado na ung mga models sa magazine. be it make up, airbrush, etc. they used to be used to cover up some minor "imperfections" -- a mole here, a scar there, a tattoo perhaps.

some mags just tend to abuse it, to the point that the model's body is literally reshaped.

With the digital imaging technology available today, any model who looks like Shrek's mom can be transformed into a stunner.

But I do agree with Badkuk: image manipulation is not new. Glamour photographers have been manipulating pictures of their subjects for decades. Thing is, technology today is more accessible and easier to use than what was available..say...30 years ago.

Well that was my point exactly. The person on the cover isn't really her anymore, minus 20lbs, absolutely flawless skin, and a digital boob and nosejob.

If you ran across the real person on the street, you probably won't recognize her.

Society has set too high a standard when it comes to beauty that it causes a lot of women to think negatively about their looks.

There was a recent survey asking local women what they think about their looks and majority of the respondents say they feel unattractive. Skin color being the number one reason.

Agree with you there uls. Western notions of beauty has definitely infiltrated philippine society and affects how filipinas percieve themselves.

On the other hand, malaki na din ang nagawa ni Dra. bello...

    heheheh

Malaki ang kinikita ni Belo and others in the cosmetic services and products industry.

people do not spend on those things... people INVEST in those things.

And the returns... talo pa stock market.

Like a girl can invest a few hundred thousand pesos to make herself more attractive... and end up marrying a prince... or a drug lord.

man is a visual creature; we tend to pay more attention to what we see with our eyes more than anything else. la eh, tao lang.

then again, as a speaker in my cousin's high school graduation said, we should strive to become more than men.

....pero bibili pa rin ako ng fhm, maxim, and uno :D

As badkuk has said, it's not new, it's just that magazines nowadays are abusing their power.

But it's not just that. The photoshop editors working for those magazines are rank amateurs. That's why we're actually having this conversation.

Back in my day, when you photoshopped a girl's picture (I used to take grad pics), you did the minimal possible to make her look "better". Erase a pimple here, a pimple there... leave the moles... don't "airbrush" the skin, that's a dead giveaway.

Simplicity is the key to a good photoshop job. The more you change, the harder it is to keep the grain of the skin intact...

The girls per se haven't gotten uglier... but as FHM and Maxim move from "***y stars", models and bar girls (not saying that models are of the same "class" as the other two...) to celebrities, they're bound to get a few that have the face... but have a little something "extra" here and there. :hihihi:

Poor subject, clumsy photography, and clumsy retouches all make for pretty s***ty spreads. Note, not all of Angelica Panganiban's pics in FHM were over-the-top photochops... there were some good, natural looking ones... it's just that the photographer was struggling to get good angles in, and they had to use photoshop to cover for him.

Mmmmhmm... Bianca King in Manifesto #2... freckle city, baby.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

    that time has already come

i find the first cleavage attractive (the one above the neckline), and definitely find the second cleavage (the one accentuated by the thong panties) attractive as well... :naughty2:

a fellow trader once told us...

if a girl tells you she wants to invest 10 grand and you grow it to a million. tell her to spend her 10 grand on herself and marry you instead. thats the only sure investment na maging million 10 grand nya... hehehe

i think yun mga girls na hindi na kailangan iphotoshop do not want to grace the cover of these magazines or naunahan na before mag-cover.

Unfortunately the widespread availability of technology does not offset the lack of great (not just good) digital artists & photographers these days. Half-baked, mediocre jobs like Angelika's and most spreads you see on stabds are attributed to amateurs who claim more than what they know about the technology and the entire process. These days you just grab a tool from the toolbox and push and pull a batch of pixels and presto you think you're a genius. Compare that to those days when most of the process happens during the scanning stage of the hi-res image. Digital retouching was done minimally on proprietary hardware and software like Scitex and SGI systems to resize or remove a mole and scratches. If ever heavy retouching was required then a meticulous pixel by pixel manipulation was done to it preserving most of the image characteristics. It's a job for a real craftsman no less.

I agree today we have a distorted view of what beautiful should look like. Thanks to those in the media who exploit these young girls as well as the gullible minds of the majority of people for money. However at the end of the day we seek authenticity even among the heavily painted celebrities we admire as beautiful. It's those untouched candid shots of people we know which speak volumes that interest us the most. An untouched photography of a person is risky to begin with, but we are sometimes rewarded for that risk by great successes such as uncovering the unknown surprises that make her and her life so interesting.
