homes built on concrete wouldn't guarantee that given that the earthquakes released more than 1.41 exajoules at its peak. the structure would already have cracks and would be washed away unless they're as large as department stores or have steel beam structures.
Damn, son! Where'd you find this?

If those concrete homes are like those barong-barongs with no steel reinforcements, it cannot withstand it. But if you build them with deep foundation and enough steel reinforcements, kaya yan.

    regarding their homes...

I don't think they have the economy of engineering a building or house that would withstand 8.9M earthquakes with their real estate prices...

some of the smaller concrete structures can't handle continuous horizontal stresses from the tsunami

Uy sikat pala tayo! One of the tectonic plates that was mentioned in the Japan 8.9 magnitude earthquake is the Philippine plate.

Go Philippine plate! Hwag ka magpapa-talo sa Pacific and North American
plates. Don't let them subduct you, and protect our country from the Big One!

On the serious side, request ko lang to all tsikoteers to include in your nightly prayers that our country be spared from a great earthquake. For if, heaven forbid, the same thing happens to us, lahat ng pinundar nating ari-arian, not to mention the lives of our loved ones, can all be gone in the blink of an eye! Lets's pray pray PRAY!

I wonder if there were large ships in the Pacific Ocean when the tsunamis struck? Nakayanan kaya nung mga barko yung waves?

    Would aircraft carriers withstand tsunamis?

In deep waters Bro,- hindi mo mararamdaman ang tsunami, as if nothing's happening. That is the way I understand it.....

However, since the topography of the land is rising (vs. the ocean level),- then the mere volume of the water that is being pushed inland causes the water level to rise significantly in the form of huge waves we call tsunami....

heart wrenching as the earthquake and tsunami maybe, i am amazed by the discipline of the japanese

there are no riots over food and water, there are no outbursts on the media, no shouts, screams or curses (at least from what we see in the news). so far, there is no news of any looting and the like

they line up in a disciplined and orderly manner at the grocery stores, relief trucks and water deliver tankers.

Ayokong paniwalaan hangga't walang official news eh.
