    Sa mga SUN subscribers...

Here comes the Sun ready to cut prices anew

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    By FRANCIS CUETO

Digitel’s Sun Cellular is ready to cut prices anew to build up its subscriber base.

The new kid in the cellphone block is making bigger rivals run for their money by offering cheaper rates that encouraged cellphone users to switch to its service. . For its pains it has been sued at the telco regulating agency.by rivals saying its service is not up to par or to government standards.

National Telecommunications Commission, however, has allowed Digitel’s marketing tack, offering cheaper rates, since it benefits users.

Now, Digitel, emboldened, will come with new promos that would give subscribers better value.

"We are reviewing different variations. We want to attack all segments of the market," said Digitel senior vice president William Pamintuan.

He said NTC’s favorable decision would allow Sun Cellular to meet its target of increasing its subscribers from the present 1.7 million to 3 million by July, six million by yearend to 10 million by next year. .

"Consumers should expect new pricing packages in the coming months. The NTC decision validates Sun Cellular’s view that there is an untapped market for bucket pricing," said Pamintuan.

Sun also announced it would spend another $200 million by next year to lay down the infrastructure needed to service the additional 4 million subscribers.

James Go, Digitel vice chair.said Sun is completing a $200 million expansion this year to increase the number of its cellular sites nationwide to about 2,000.

"We are investing $200 million this year and another $200 million next year for our wireless business. We want to build a strong network for our text and call unlimited plan under 24/7," said Go.

Go told shareholders during Digitel’s annual general meeting yesterday that like what the company had done this year, it would also use internal funds and borrowings to finance the expansion program in 2006.

Charles Lim, Digitel’s head for mobile services said that Sun Cellular should be "cash positive" by the middle of next year in terms of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization or Ebitda.

"By 2007, we expect to be Ebit positive and by 2008, the cellular company should start posting profits," said Lim.

The Gokongwei wireless brand would continue pushing for its 24/7 unlimited text and call deal within the network.

"To us, 24/7 is still the best value proposition and we want to give more people the opportunity to come in." said Lim.
