    thinking of picking up a Canon 350D and 17-85 mm EF-S lens, pero parang sobrang mahal ng canon stuff dito? i'm not too comfortable buying from quiapo and gray-market dealers. from the official canon.ph website:

    Canon PowerShot A95: P27,500
    Canon PowerShot S60: P34,500
    Canon PowerShot S70: P41,950
    Canon PowerShot G6: P47,500
    Canon PowerShot Pro1: P59,950
    Canon EOS-350D with bundled 18-55 mm EF-S lens: not quoted in the site, but last time i asked in the canon showroom in megamall, it was around P68,000 if i remember right (the 17-85mm EF-S lens isn't even available here yet)

    in the US, the prices from a major retail store (hence, hardly any discounts), Best Buy, are as follows:

    Canon PowerShot A95: US$300 -> P16,800 [difference of P10,700]
    Canon PowerShot S60: US$400 -> P22,400 [difference of P12,100]
    Canon PowerShot S70: US$450 -> P25,200 [difference of P16,750]
    Canon PowerShot Pro1: US$800 -> P44,800 [difference of P15,150]
    Canon EOS-350D with 18-55 kit lens: US$1,000 -> P56,000

    and in Hong Kong, based on the official Canon.hk site (no discounts too):

    Canon PowerShot A95: HK$2,780 -> P20,016 [difference of P7,484]
    Canon PowerShot S70: HK$4,280 -> P30,816 [difference of P11,134]
    Canon PowerShot Pro1: HK$6,980 -> P50,256 [difference of P9,694]
    Canon EOS-350D with 18-55 kit lens: HK$7,680 -> P55,296

    mas okay bang bumili sa Hong Kong? if so, is there an international warranty (that Canon Philippines will honor) available?

    never get from canon, yung battery lang nila costs 2x as much as they do in HK. I bought replacement batteries instead, higher amperage, half the cost.

    marahil sir sa name of the brand,pero kung ako tatanungin mas-maganda ang performance ng Nikon kung ikukumpara mo sa Cannon,although cannon din ang camera ko.kasi here in middle east eh kapag kinu-kumpara ko ang presyo ang dalawa eh talagang mas-mahal ang Nikon,kahit anong unit mapa digital,web cam,lahat ng klase ng camera eh well ahead ang Nikon.yung lang sir...

    As always, dont base performance on brand alone. There are a lot of models under each brand name, and some are better than the others. To assume that just because the high end of one brand is better than the high end of another automatically trickles down to everything else will make you nothing more than a brand zealot.

    i think i've made up my mind to go with Canon with its 350D over Nikon's D70/D70s hehe... lighter and significantly more compact (a big plus for me), light high-quality lenses are available and are cheaper (parang puro six digits yung presyo ng nikon lenses hehehe... ang bibigat pa), the lens selection is wider, it looks like it has less noise at high ISO (which is a big reason to go dSLR in the first place), and people say that local canon aftersales is better than nikon.

    although.... D70 is more comfortable to hold, is cheaper, and i have a 60 mm/2.8 Micro Nikkor i'd be able to use, and mukhang mas reliable with less reports of failures (although it could also be because Canon sells so much more cameras than nikon)... hmmm......... still, i think i'll go with canon hehe

    saan ba okay bumili sa HK, o kaya dito? maraming manloloko sa HK e hehehe... pati rin dito :D

    Better buy it here in HK. Alam ko may international warranty mga yan. Kung yung price nakuha mo sa site mismo ng Canon, sigurado ko mas mura mo makukuha yan dyan sa mga shops sa Mong Kok.

    May sense bang bumili ng Canon PowerShot Pro na 8-Megapixels? Yung pambili ko ng Fortuner wawaldasin ko na at balak kong bumili nitong PowerShot Pro. Sabi nila overkill daw yung 8-Megapixels? Nag-mura na pala ngayon? Yung huling tingin ko eh P70k+ ang price. Ngayon eh P50k+ na lang???

    kahit dagdag mo pamasahe at hotel papuntang HK, may sukli ka pang pambili ng camera.hehe. seryoso. It's also extremely easy to get from place to place cause of the subways.

    EL Chicane,

    mas maganda yung Olympus C-8080WZ kesa Canon Pro1 hehe. hindi lang naman 8 MP binibili mo diyan, yung lenses ng Pro1 at 8080 professional quality na, plus, maraming ibang "pro" features hehe (full manual controls, larger max apertures, etc.). so yes, may use naman itong niche na ito hehe.

    Canon warranties are country specific. The product warranty is different from a sellers warranty. If you return a defective unit to a Canon seller or reseller, they can replace it at no cost due to the seller warranty they provide. A product warranty is different: in a product warranty, you can bring a defective unit to an accredited Canon shop and they would repair it at cost.

    So, Canon Philippines would not honor the 12 month warranty for a Canon product if the product was purchased internationally.

    However, I might be wrong: a couple of years ago, Canon offered a 3-year warranty for their manual (still) cameras.

    Canon USA has an Instant Exchange/International Warranty program that goes something like this:

    The InstantExchange Program expedites the shipment of a Canon factory refurbished product in exchange for a non-working Canon product, freight prepaid both directions, and requires the use of a major credit card.

    Call (757) 413-2848 and follow the voice prompts for details and service. Hours of operation:

    M-F: 8:00 AM - midnight EST (excluding holidays)
    Sat.: Noon - 8:00 PM EST (excluding holidays)
    The InstantExchange Program is available:
    (1) only for certain printer, facsimile, multifunction, and scanner models;
    (2) only during the express limited warranty period for such products; and
    (3) only in the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii.
    InstantExchange Service

    A Canon Customer Care Center or ASF technician will attempt to diagnose the nature of the problem and, if possible, correct it over the telephone. If the problem cannot be corrected over the telephone, and you elect the InstantExchange option, a reference number will be issued to you. You will be asked for the Product serial number and other information pertaining to your defective Product and for a ship-to location for the replacement Product (must include street address). You must also provide your major credit card number. Your credit card will be charged in an amount up to the price of a new Product, (a) if your defective Product is not received by Canon USA within 10 business days after you receive the replacement Product, (b) if the defects in the defective Product are not covered by this limited warranty; or (c) if the warranty period on the Product has expired or has not been sufficiently established by appropriate documentation.

    The Canon USA repair facility will ship out the replacement Product, via overnight courier, prepaid by Canon USA. After receipt of the replacement Product (with instructions and a prepaid waybill), follow the instructions on how to ship the defective Product to the Canon USA repair facility. You must return the defective Product in the shipping carton in which the replacement Product was packed and include the reference number, A COPY OF YOUR DATED PROOF OF PURCHASE (BILL OF SALE), and a complete explanation of the problem. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY OTHER ITEMS WITH THE DEFECTIVE PRODUCT IN THE RETURN SHIPPING CARTON, AND BE SURE TO RETAIN YOUR PRINTHEAD AND INK CARTRIDGE(S) AND TANK(S).

    InstantExchange Service expedites, usually by the next business day, the exchange of a defective Product with a replacement Product. The Canon Customer Care Center must receive your request for this service by 3 p.m. E.T. Monday through Friday, except holidays, to ensure that the replacement Product is sent out by the next business day. (Two (2) business day InstantExchange Service for Alaska and Hawaii). Canon USA does not guarantee next business day service in the event of the occurrence of factors beyond its reasonable control. The replacement Product you receive will be a refurbished or reconditioned unit and will be covered for the balance of the period remaining on your original limited warranty. NOTE THAT BY USING THIS SERVICE YOU WILL KEEP THE REPLACEMENT PRODUCT THAT IS SENT TO YOU. CANON USA WILL RETAIN THE DEFECTIVE PRODUCT THAT YOU ORIGINALLY PURCHASED, WHICH SHALL BECOME THE PROPERTY OF CANON USA. InstantExchange warranty program service is available only during the express limited-warranty period for your Product and only in the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii during such period.

    *Support program specifics are subject to change without notice. InstantExchange warranty program service is subject to availability of refurbished replacement units.
    This is not free though: it's a paid service.

    I bought my cameras in Quiapo. Most of the shops there offer product warranties and seller warranties.
