Canon warranties are country specific. The product warranty is different from a sellers warranty. If you return a defective unit to a Canon seller or reseller, they can replace it at no cost due to the seller warranty they provide. A product warranty is different: in a product warranty, you can bring a defective unit to an accredited Canon shop and they would repair it at cost.
So, Canon Philippines would not honor the 12 month warranty for a Canon product if the product was purchased internationally.
However, I might be wrong: a couple of years ago, Canon offered a 3-year warranty for their manual (still) cameras.
Canon USA has an Instant Exchange/International Warranty program that goes something like this:
This is not free though: it's a paid service. The InstantExchange Program expedites the shipment of a Canon factory refurbished product in exchange for a non-working Canon product, freight prepaid both directions, and requires the use of a major credit card.
Call (757) 413-2848 and follow the voice prompts for details and service. Hours of operation:
M-F: 8:00 AM - midnight EST (excluding holidays)
Sat.: Noon - 8:00 PM EST (excluding holidays)
The InstantExchange Program is available:
(1) only for certain printer, facsimile, multifunction, and scanner models;
(2) only during the express limited warranty period for such products; and
(3) only in the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii.
InstantExchange Service
A Canon Customer Care Center or ASF technician will attempt to diagnose the nature of the problem and, if possible, correct it over the telephone. If the problem cannot be corrected over the telephone, and you elect the InstantExchange option, a reference number will be issued to you. You will be asked for the Product serial number and other information pertaining to your defective Product and for a ship-to location for the replacement Product (must include street address). You must also provide your major credit card number. Your credit card will be charged in an amount up to the price of a new Product, (a) if your defective Product is not received by Canon USA within 10 business days after you receive the replacement Product, (b) if the defects in the defective Product are not covered by this limited warranty; or (c) if the warranty period on the Product has expired or has not been sufficiently established by appropriate documentation.
The Canon USA repair facility will ship out the replacement Product, via overnight courier, prepaid by Canon USA. After receipt of the replacement Product (with instructions and a prepaid waybill), follow the instructions on how to ship the defective Product to the Canon USA repair facility. You must return the defective Product in the shipping carton in which the replacement Product was packed and include the reference number, A COPY OF YOUR DATED PROOF OF PURCHASE (BILL OF SALE), and a complete explanation of the problem. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY OTHER ITEMS WITH THE DEFECTIVE PRODUCT IN THE RETURN SHIPPING CARTON, AND BE SURE TO RETAIN YOUR PRINTHEAD AND INK CARTRIDGE(S) AND TANK(S).
InstantExchange Service expedites, usually by the next business day, the exchange of a defective Product with a replacement Product. The Canon Customer Care Center must receive your request for this service by 3 p.m. E.T. Monday through Friday, except holidays, to ensure that the replacement Product is sent out by the next business day. (Two (2) business day InstantExchange Service for Alaska and Hawaii). Canon USA does not guarantee next business day service in the event of the occurrence of factors beyond its reasonable control. The replacement Product you receive will be a refurbished or reconditioned unit and will be covered for the balance of the period remaining on your original limited warranty. NOTE THAT BY USING THIS SERVICE YOU WILL KEEP THE REPLACEMENT PRODUCT THAT IS SENT TO YOU. CANON USA WILL RETAIN THE DEFECTIVE PRODUCT THAT YOU ORIGINALLY PURCHASED, WHICH SHALL BECOME THE PROPERTY OF CANON USA. InstantExchange warranty program service is available only during the express limited-warranty period for your Product and only in the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii during such period.
*Support program specifics are subject to change without notice. InstantExchange warranty program service is subject to availability of refurbished replacement units.
I bought my cameras in Quiapo. Most of the shops there offer product warranties and seller warranties.
Thanks for the infos. Wala naman akong balak ipa-blow-up yung picture ko. Baka lang the pics will look much sharper with a higher resolution camera (hindi ba the higher the resolution, the more data you can put into the picture?). Saka isa pa, since nabanggit nyo na rin yung lens, yun bang lens ng Canon Pro 8-px or yung Olympus 8080 eh hindi available dun sa mga models with a lower resolution like 4 or 8 px?
I bought my Canon in HK because of the cheaper price. Don't blame Canon. I think almost all electronic products are taxed heavily (too bad for us). But the warranty is not for international coverage. So I just made sure everything worked. Bought it on the second day (after walking around Nathan Road and ending up buying in HK island), and used the thing 'til I left.
I believe one of the posters here is from Canon... Maybe he can give you a good price.![]()
may mga warranty den naman yung ibang shops sa hidalgo. check this out na lang.

Best places to get Camera gear in HK are in Mong Kok and a few other places. But mostly , I get them in Mong Kok. There are 2 types of different products here in HK. 1) Products with HK warranty and 2) Products without (grey market imports) or in local linggo, "Water Products".
As expected "Water Products" are substantially cheaper than the one's with official warranty. But since we're talking about DSLR's here, this is a pretty penny thus, I'd think it would be better to buy one's with official warranty.
I've confirmed with my cousin who has contacts with Canon Phil. He said that Canon does not have International warranty. They do however have some sort of International Warranty for Pro Photographers who travel around the world frequently. I can't recall the acronym anymore but it's only for Pro Photographers (the likes of which who are from National Geographic or Big News Orgs.).
Also, Canon products in HK are cheaper than RP counterparts due to it being a Tax Free zone. Canon products and other electronics gadgets have a premium price back there in the RP.
If you really wanna buy here in HKG, msg me and I can bring you around. Also, check out this site for more details with regards to prices.

oh yeah, i forgot to mention...
if you do decide to buy in the Phil instead for the Phil. warranty, then I must warn you that Nikon support by Columbia isn't exactly heaven sent... i know of or have heard of a lot of photographers in other forums of their experiences and how turned off they are with support by Columbia.
Canon Phil warranty on the other hand is waayyy better. So the choice is up to you...
I agree. Here's the link to that Nikon advocacy: http://www.themassif.com/2004_10.phpOriginally Posted by need4speed
By the way someone mentioned 8Megapixel is overkill. For taking fun shots and souvenirs, yes. But I believe it all depend on your purpose. For example, an advertising outfit who took set photos of our equipment used an 8MP Canon camera for review purposes only.
When it came to taking the "money shots" they used their large-format Hasselblad with an 18Megapixel digital camera back. They said digital camera backs can be fitted to most conventional SLRs with some modifications. I've also read somewhere that the good old 35mm film resolution is superior to digital resolution up to about 12megapixel.

im not sure kung ang handle name niya is ...GELSALAZAR...
i repeat im not sure ..kung siya nga taga canon nag bibigay ng special offer non sa digital camera dahil may promo yata non .
si ACT111 is the local distributor of columbia dba? maybe he could give u a cheaper price for the nikons
my advise:
buy the unit here in quiapo
buy the accessories somewhere else whereever they may be cheaper
justification:
1. why quiapo? cheaper than getting it from malls... the quiapo (at least the ones i know of) dealers also get their stocks from local distributors... i don't think that they do parallel import and distribution lalo na kung may malaking distributor dito.. kaya nila ibaba ang presyo dahil hindi lang particular sa isang brand ang dala nila sa shops... halo halo.. kaya di nila kailangan magtaga ng presyo... also.. karamihan ng mga pang negosyo (video photo coverage ) ay sa quiapo bumibili ng supplies.... kung warranty naman ang issue... quiapo dealers honor warranties.. product or seller man yan... especially if you buy it from them... kung sa HK ka bibili, ok lang KUNG madalas kang magpabalik balik na kung magkaproblema eh madali mo madadala dun for repairs.. pero pag bihira ka naman bumiyahe dun o kaya wala gano kilala na pabalik balik dun.. medyo mahihirapan ka...
as it is.. although the main unit is a major percentage of total cost, other accessories will eat up around 20 - 30% of total cost... and here is where you can save a lot by buying elsewhere...
sa mga battery and canon specific attachments / accessories... wala kang choice kungdi Canon brand.. so choice mo na lang is kung san ka bibili... halos ala naman warranty pinag uusapan dyan.. but kung lenses ang pag uusapan.. don't limit yourself just to Canon... you can also look into other brands like vivitar, sigma, tamron (which by the way had a very very good 28 - 300mm lens back when i was still an afficionado)...
in particular .. kakilala ko yung sa Mayer photo ... i got my stuff from him (slr, flash, lens)... natigil lang nung nanakaw sa akin yung EOS ko pati yung tamron lens pati yung 550ex flash waaaaa.... but i've been thinking hard about getting the digital EOS... may iba pa kasi akong flash and lenses dito . but then may iba pa akong pinag iipunan so medyo low priority muna...

isa pa, wag nyong ibase sa mega pix count. Ibase nyo sa laki ng lens.
in most cases, you won't need anything more than 4mgpx anyway unless you plan to blow up big shots beyond 8R
