Those security checks can deter dumb criminals. And if you happen to watch America's Dumbest Criminals, they do exist and even seem to number in the thousands.

For me, a layer of security check is better than nothing at all. Like what the others have said, it gives peace of mind to the other shoppers that at least, something is being done.
