Freeways are the most fun. As soon as I get on the ramp, I accelerate to traffic speed like a scared cat. Then, I back off a bit as I find room to merge. Once you merge? Go with the flow, slowing down as needed if you're on the slow (right) lane. You also need to keep some distance between you and the car up front so there's room for others to merge.
The freeways within city limits can be daunting during rush hour. But, once you get outside the city and there is a lot less traffic, it's relaxing enough to use cruise control.
Anyway, your anxiety is normal. My wife is the same way even though she had already driven coast to coast using the freeway. She still won't use it unless she has no choice.
